It's the National Rail Enquiries app and if you use the "Live Trains" option for your home station it will show you arrivals or departures from all stations. If you know the scheduled arrival time of your trains, you can see which station it starts from, be it KXC, Moorgate or Horsham, for example. It will show cancelled or late running trains.

Give it a try.

I can't make it do that - it only shows trains from St Neots going to P'boro, which is no use to me. I have to set it as KC, which is also no use as half the trains go from St P.

I've tried it, plus Train Line, plus Thameslink's own app, which is actually a better one as, while you still have to set up bot journeys (KC-StN, StP-StN) they do at least both show on the front page.

UncleEbenezer - Henry James? Never heard of him. Wiki says this though: "is considered by many to be among the greatest novelists in the English language." - :)

I've just tried on my mobile (iPhone) National rail app
Live Trains screen ARRIVING tab
AT St Neots [SNO is code]
From [leave blank]
it 'works'
The St Pancras one shows as coming from Horsham as it's City Thameslink via Blackfriars/St Pancras

If I change the 'From' box to STP (code for London St Pancras International) it does seem to work

Right - so I have to guess that the Horsham one stops in London? And open it to see that it stops at St P and at what time.

I think it wasn't working before as I set SNO as my 'home station' or something.

It's ridiculous. I can't begin to imagine how anyone copes with this nonsense. The problem is, it's all taking too much head space, commuting needs to be mundane and predictable.

No, if you change the 'From' box to STP it will (should) only show trains due at St Neots from or via St Pancras
Leave it blank and you see everything in both directions
You can't, as far as i know, specify 'from St Pancras OR Kings Cross'

Yes, your last line is the problem! I do have to guess.

Why can't I specify 'London'!?

The problem is, the apps don't work about 70% of the time as the signal is so bad due to everyone trying to use it, so I try to check before I leave work, only to get there and find it's changed then have to run to the other station, find then it's all to pot over there as well, then to run back and find a train has magically appeared and is not on the app anyway.....

Why KC can't show the St P (and vice versa) boards I have no flippin' idea!

If you do a FROM St Pancras TO St Neots and a FROM Kings Cross TO St Neots query they should both end up on the my travel tab of the app so you can flick between them and occasionally refresh

I do, currently, have two mobiles.

But, you can't refresh at KC, there is not enough signal.

I can find ways to works around it but why the hell should I? Why can't the train co just do something that makes it easy!?

Mel, I've just put in SNO and left "To/from" as optional. It shows me five trains, three to Peterborough, one to Three Bridges and one to Horsham. The first Peterborough starts at KXC, which you can see by tapping it. Then go back and the second you can see comes from Horsham, as does the third. The red blob shows me that it left Merstham and is due at Coulsdon South shortly.

My point is that you know that you want to get back for 1830, say, so you tap on the trains to see the route and where the train is now. If it's a GN train and is still at KXC, that's where you go. If it's a Thameslink and you can get to STP before it does, that's your best bet. My guess is that if has not yet got to Blackfriars BFR, then you are safe going for it. From BFR to STP it will be on automatic control, so it should arrive when it says, 9 minutes later.

There is some data, but it only goes back a week, eg...

http://www.realtimetrains.co.uk/search/ ... wtt&toc=GN

By selecting custom times, you can select a date and then a time range. Clicking on a particular train from the list gives it's timetabled and actual times. Eg...

Urgh.

I'd like to thank my first employers for sending me to Docklands from a small market town in Surrey every day for months in the early 90s*, showed me I never wanted to get a London job that was more than 10 minutes walk from Waterloo. I learnt I just don't like long commutes. Lucky I've had the choice I guess. I know when my da worked in London print works, he had did the same train commute for years, trained his mind/body to wake him up as the train trundled over the level crossing just before the station.

* 15 minute walk to the station, hour on the train, the drain to bank, then DLR to Canary Wharf. Loved it when I got there, nice and vibrant etc, but 4 hours a day commuting. What a waste of time.

What WiFi? There's no WiFi at KC?

Funnily enough, I've run out of data this month for the first time ever (only two days to the end of the data month though). Only two things have changed - new phone (yay, it's great, but I forgot I'd not downloaded my music onto it so it will have been playing from the cloud or whatever) and more needing to check train times constantly!

It's worse than that UI!

30 min drive to the station (I leave at 6.15am), then a 20 min Tube and a ten min walk, on my employed days. Then on my client days, I have a longer Tube journey with a change, but a 5 min walk - but they finish at 3pm so I tend to leave about 4pm which is nice!

3pm London KC to Edinburgh - just arrived at sunny Darlington - enjoying the free bar and menu options - plus a wifi connection that takes me back to my old modem in the 90's - just missing the sound effects. Feeling a bit nostalgic as this is my last trip north before I move permanently back to the Isle of Wight from Scotland in July.

Can't wait to reconnect with the Isle of Wight railway - now that is an experience
