Hidden landscapes revealed by the recent heatwave

Very interesting article on the BBC site, looking at how the recent UK heatwave has revealed long-hidden features in our landscapes, and shown us a ground-level historical past that has normally been hidden from us.

The great recent developments in drone-technology have played a large part in these discoveries -

As the summer sun continues to beat down on the British Isles, ghosts are appearing in the yellowing fields.

Normally kept hidden by lush grasses and crops, old and prehistoric features are making themselves known through imprints on fields and lawns, some for the first time in known memory.

It's hard to see these features from the ground - but with the rise of drones for aerial photography, they can be captured where they may have remained unidentified in previous heatwaves.

The marks are revealed when grass or crops on top of wood or stone still in the ground flourish or deteriorate at different rates to surrounding material in the unusually hot weather.

This is not a new phenomenon and has been known since flying became possible. In the hot summer of 1959 and in earlier years ,unknown archaeological sites were revealed.

It has long been appreciated that disturbed ground has a higher evaporation rate than undisturbed ground, which reveals walls , when ancient ditches tend to hold more moisture for longer ,showing up much greener.

In winter , previous roadworks show up through the whiter frost over tarmac that covers old trenches.

How wonderful. I didn't know this happened. It's obvious of course, but still marvellous. Shows how very deep down the ground has dried to.

They used to show this sort of thing on Time Team, sometimes even in good growing years when you could see different colours in crops, though not as dramatic as during drought.

I've seen some on Google Earth, where the aerial photos were taken in the right conditions.

Indeed, I think we had some similar stories of 1976. Or maybe I'm misremembering some other occasion and some other part of the world that had been revealed in drought.

Certainly when I worked in Earth Observation - most of the 1990s - this was a well-known phenomenon. For example, certain satellites' data were particularly interesting to archaeologists after a prolonged hot dry spell.

Near infra-red and thermal imaging can both be useful for revealing hidden features.

Some more UK photos showing the effects of the recent heatwave -

This summer's heatwave has had a dramatic impact on the UK's landscape, turning previously lush parks and playing fields yellow.

The effect is revealed in NASA satellite images, which show a green scene in the top image in May this year to a scorched yellow-brown colour by mid-July.

Hate to pour cold water on it, but those satellite images undergo quite a bit of processing to display those natural-looking colours.

On a similar theme - https://www.rte.ie/news/leinster/2018/0 ... bray-head/

Though if they'd thought about it they should really have spelled out `IRLAND' - the German name for Ireland. I'm not sure how many Aryan aircrew would have been familiar with the term `Eire' in 1940.

Anyway, I'm not sure the report's right. The first E isn't clearly visible, and I suspect it was a sign created by one of the locals to remind him of a good place to light a fire! ;)
