Talking of £5 notes

My newsagent thinks that the Scottish new £5 note is more attractive than the English new £5 note. Having been shown both notes side by side, I am inclined to agree.

The Scottish note has a less slimy feel about about it. And having read about how it was designed, it's more fun too. For example, it has midges.

There are actually three different Scottish £5 notes, issued by RBS, Bank of Scotland and Clydesdale Bank.

None of them legal tender, of course.

Those 3 banks are authorised to issue notes and the banknotes are legal currency and can be accepted throughout the UK, but it doesn't necessarily mean they will be. To quote The Association of Commercial Banknote Issuers: "The term 'legal tender' has very little practical meaning as far as ordinary, everyday transactions are concerned, and it has no bearing on the acceptability of authorised banknotes as a means of payment …" Crucially, it adds: "The acceptability of any means of payment, including banknotes, is essentially a matter for agreement between the parties involved."

Yes I know that. We have such a variety of notes here that basically any piece of blue paper/plastic around the right size will be accepted, nobody's got a hope of remembering what's they're supposed to look like.

(Personally I wish we'd get rid of the lot and use "real" BoE notes.)
