Eddie Mair has left the PM show on Radio 4 without a fuss or a goodbye. Was due to finish on Friday but after Wednesday's show decided it was a perfect way to finish, so pulled a sickie for the last two shows.

He sounds just like me. I'll probably be retiring in about 3 years and am absolutely dreading the obligatory and embarrassing drinks or restaurant Goodbye session. It doesn't help that I'm quite a shy person and genuinely hate these sorts of things. Far more prefer to slip away and then invite a chosen few for an intimate bbq and piss-up at my place.

I did wonder why it sounded like the work experience guy was on yesterday. I'm sure they had all manner of things planned for him, and I am totally gutted that he will no longer be doing pm. I've not felt like this since Jane Garvie gave up on five live drive. Her partnership with Peter Allen was peerless and it was never the same after she left.
How long now before Danny Baker calls it quite on Saturday morning, and Boogie and Arlene stop doing breakfast on Forth One. I wish things didn't have to change ....

Yes I did have a soft spot for Eddie Mair after his interview with Boris Johnson "You're a nasty piece of work, aren't you?"

The number of times he's performed hit-and-run: write or say something provocative then disappear leaving his colleagues to field the questions, I can only conclude he's a true old-fashioned coward. In the sense of a bully and a coward.
