Harper Valley PTA.

A looked-down on mother ruffles the feathers of a smug panel on the school PTA:

I only remember Dolly Parton singing it but she wasn't the original singer.

Was going to post the Ballad of Lucy Jordan, Marianne Faithfull

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=d0NxhFn0szc

but listened to it and it's not really much of a story. Got reading the comments and apparently it was written by Shel Silverstein.

Shel Silverstein also wrote "A boy named Sue" as sung by Johnny Cash which does seem to fit the bill:

Wow? I listened to it and heard a helluva poignant and bittersweet story ramed full of emotion - but there you go. Anyway thanks for posting.

As I'm here.

Not the original. I think this may have been filmed at a TMF USA (Brooklyn) Ladies Social back in the late '90s.

Whiskey In The Jar.

"The Battle of New Orleans"

Written by Jimmy Driftwood and recorded many times, but probably most associated with Johnny Horton, whose version went to #1 in Billboard's Hot 100 chart in 1959.

What I meant to say was that it doesn't really take you on a journey from start to finish (which is what this thread is asking for). It's Lucy Jordan ruminating on what might have been. As told in a poignant and bittersweet story rammed full of emotion way 8-) As a song/ballad, it's fantastic. I can (and do) listen to it several times in a row.

OB story. A history of women's shoes, as told by the Poozies, supplemented by some interesting photographs.

This one always makes me cry - I don't think the actual story is agreed upon, but it's thought that the girl had a baby with BJ in secret, they drowned it and BJ couldn't cope and killed himself:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WoMF_mSeWJo

Ode To Billy Joe

And, sort of a story - well, it has a 'reveal' so it is one:

Lola. Excellent song.

It wouldn't be a music post from me without a James song - not exactly a story, but about a homeless person, really worth listeeing to as it's also a statement on social issues and the human condition to some extent:

In my top ten James tracks: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HLCE5KDBcmc

Of Monsters and Heroes and Men.

I’d forgotten which it was but it was the ending which clinched it, rather than the middle. That’s also a track I used to mention at TMF. You probably did as well. I used to be under the impression that Mountain were Canadian, given the whaling etc. Eventually put right at TMF.

RS probably posted the link twice so we could all enjoy it in stereo. ;)

As I'm here and in view of the thread title THIS surely must have a place in the mix.
