A handy guide!
I hadn't realised that Ofcom have published a jolly interesting guide to offensive language - and offensive gestures!
They are graded into mild, medium, strong and strongest - the very vindaloo of offensiveness.
It's a sign of the decadent company I've kept over the years that I knew all but about half a dozen of the examples. I shan't print the ones I didn't recognise - after all, having read the guide cover to cover I'd have no excuse for offending the delicate sensibilities of my fellow Fools - but I must admit that I'd never heard of an Iberian Slap, though I recognised it when I saw it.
And I have to say that having discovered the meaning of some of those words I didn't know I'd have been quite happy to continue in blissful ignorance.
Highly educational!

Re: A handy guide!
Well, certainly the 'strongest' language in the first section are words I hear almost daily at work, but I have sent this handy guide to my colleagues* for when the new Head of HR arrives as she may not be as....tolerant....as me!
A few I'd not heard of though. Urban Dictionary here I come.
Thanks!
Mel
*they are already saying thanks for the new words....

I've always found the Viz Profanisaurus to be the most helpful reference n this subject.

That was in common usage when I was at school, but it could be used about males or females. But yes, it was crude.

Be careful. Urban Dictionary is a superb resource (?), but it did introduce me to the meaning of the world's most disgusting word.
6 letters. Starts with 'F'
I am aware of that word. Don't Google Arctic Pipeline*! You'll thank me....
'Feck' is not made up by Father Ted!

Yes, I think the sardonic smile was less that the *term* was unknown, and perhaps more that the activity decreases with age......
I can neither confirm nor deny.

Hmm - actually, are you sure it's 6, not 5 letters? If so, you'll have to PM me!

Or possibly that worsening eyesight and/or flexibility mean that the participants become less able to recognise each other during the activity? ;-)

Every time Trump does that finger and thumb gesture, making an O shape with his digits and jabbing it aggressively into the air, I get hopeful that some mortally offended Arab (or maybe South American) might rush up from the crowd and cut off his peroration.

Dago* Seen as derogatory to people of Italian descent
Really? I always thought Dagos were Spanish, or Latin American. Surely the correct (or rather in this context incorrect) term for Italians is Wops?

It reminded me a bit of the Peter Cook and Dudley Moore sketch parodying Johnny Speight's difficulties with the BBC over Alf Garnett's choice of swear language, something like two bl**dies being worth one b*gg*r. The BBC in those days, or even Mary Whitehouse never seemed concerned over Alf's choice of descriptions for immigrant communities.
Apropos of the difficulties faced by the Labour party, aren't they missing "Zio" as a term of abuse for Jews?

Re: A handy guide!
Hmm, totally lost.. Can we have it as a crossword clue?
(Anyway, as I pointed out in a previous thread, the rudest word in the Universe is 'Belgium', apart from on Earth)

You see FTFY on Bulletin Boards all the time as in "Fixed that for you" (usually tongue in cheek or sarcastically), however Urban Dictionary has a less benign version as I found out when pointing a friend to the meaning once. She wasn't impressed when she scrolled down...I did warn her not to...

Huh? That's very tame by Urban Dictionary standards.

Re: A handy guide!
I have noticed one oddity. Apparently members of the Irish Traveller community are upset by P...y, but don't object to Diddecoy.
Brings me on to the subject of spherical objects. An old story related to a report being circulated in the Civil Service. Someone wrote on it "Round Objects". The response was "Who is Mr Round, and to what does he object?".
I feel that the whole thing in [expletive deleted], in the acceptable meaning.
