Reasons to be glad summer's over.
No more flies and wasps.
No mowing to do every week.
Having a nice break from salads.
Cars no longer oven hot to get into.
Yep, I'm almost looking forward to the dark, cold, dull days ahead ..... but not quite.......

This is true. People in hot countries only mow their lawn in the winter, when it rains. If it does not rain then grass doesn't grow just like it doesn't grow in the winter here, because it also doesn't grow below 50 F or so.

In the Autumn I try to focus on the fact that every morning, Spring is one day closer....

Re: Reasons to be glad summer's over.
I attended a hospital appointment yesterday afternoon. At the main enterance is a large electronic information and bulletin board and when I was leaving it was displaying:
'12-09-18' - '14:36' - ' 40 °C'.
Granted it was in the direct sunlight but heh, I thrive on temperatures of this level. One of the reasons I decant to Panama for three months during the winter.

I too prefer the Autumn/Spring - I find it far easier to warm myself up (jumpers/radiators/extra bed layers etc) than cool down during the Summer heat.

24C, blue skies, light breeze and I'm happy
As I'm getting older I find cold weather harder to deal with. I can stand hot days,as long as it's not humid, and it cools down at night

Me too (without the #!)
I've spent years trying to work out my perfect temperature, and I've concluded it's about 22 or 23. Warm enough for shirt sleeves and shorts and just to sit in the sun doing nothing, but not so warm that the thought of going for a walk or indulging in any other physical activity induces gloom.
Unlike other people I've actually found that my tolerance for heat has diminished as I've got older. I now find anything over about 35 actively unpleasant, and the first thing I consider when looking for a holiday break is the likely temperature on arrival.
Having said that, I can't stand most of an English winter. Whilst I love cold, sunny days with lots of snow they're few and far between, and most of the period from November to February is just mild, dark and wet - miserable as sin.
This winter, now that I've more free time, I'm determined to abandon the joyless UK and get a lot more sun - I might even have a look at Panama, though it's always struck me as one of those sunny places full of shady people (pace panamagold! )

I find anything from 16-20degC to be perfectly comfortable outdoors, but even 20 far too cold for inside. I guess because I'm usually doing something outside, but sat without moving inside.

Absolutely it is all dependent on what you are doing...my ideal temperature for going for a cycle ride or run is definitely below 20c but 25c is better for the beach.
At the moment I am writing this in my kitchen sitting in shorts and a t shirt and at 21.7c it feels perfect.

Re: Reasons to be glad summer's over.
I'm most definitely glad that hot sticky heatwave is over - it was unbearable (though made more bearable by my cool max pillow....). I considered changing to the winter duvet at the weekend as we had a chilly night (5deg when I got up) but been fine since then so summer weight stays for now, though I have put a throw over the bed now.
I far prefer the cold, while the snow did get a bit tedious last winter at least we didn't have months of just claustrophobic greyness.
Mid 20's c is about right for me. I also dislike going to hot countries on holiday. And my lawn was only mowed once over the summer though I note with a sort of detached interest that it probably needs doing again.
I am glad the mossies have gone but not pleased to see the spiders arriving!

It's spider season...
I noticed the first conkers last week - they are supposed to be a spider deterrent, but not sure if there's any evidence they work.

I can confirm that this deterrent works. We have lots of spiders in the house - but not a single conker!

Same way penguins have a unique plumage which deters polar bears. When did you last see a nature documentary showing polar bears attacking a penguin colony? Must work.

My wife has deployed the conkers - just where she spotted large spiders strolling across the floor

Reason's to be glad summer's over? Not many but given the awful day we had yesterday, I made the first soup of the Autumn and it is excellent. I also lit my woodburner for the first time this Autumn. Lovely!
Apart from that I prefer summer.

Re: Reasons to be glad summer's over.
No idea about conkers, but I use anti-spider spray. I've also still got the mossie thing plugged in so that might help.
I've had to assist a couple to a watery death though. It's better for all of us if they just stay out of my house. The last one was so big I had to unscrew the press down plug hole to wash him down, after I screwed it back in I swear I could hear him knocking on the underside asking to come out.
The anti spider spray does seem to work, or maybe it's an illusion, but I don't care which.

I don't generally mind spiders, but I do agree that those very large ones are a bit disconcerting, even if they are quite harmless and do a good job in keeping down the population of other unwelcome guests.
However, I would never drown one. If I find one in the sink or bath I just put a glass jar over them and then slide a piece of card over the top of the jar. You can then carry the covered jar outside and release the spider to a long and happy life

YOU can - I can't. I'm way too scared of them to get that close. I have a morbid fear they will run over my feet when I release them. I can do it now and then but not the big ones, this would have struggled to contain itself in any of my glasses, plus it was in the bath, on the side, and moving about - the only thing worse than seeing a spider in the house is seeing a spider in the house and then not knowing where it went! So I couldn't take my eye off that one to go and get something and I'm not sure, given the curvature of the bath side, it would have worked.
The anti spider spray is best, it stops them coming in at all. I only had about two last autumn.
