Probably not a joke if you're a severe coeliac, as a few people I know are - I doubt it's because the gluten is absorbed through the hair, it's probably more that it gets in the pores and potentially mucus membranes like nose, inner ear and even swallowed.

People I know can't use the same wooden spoon to stir pasta and later use it on their own food.
