It'sthe inevitable outcome when nobody has any optimistic response Snorves. Just change the subject. Who wants to admit the world is copulated?
I always get a bit down in February - thanks for this thread.

That's weird - February is normally the first time for quite a while that I actually start to feel a little brighter after a series of long, cold winter months starting all the way back in September......

The birds have started singing again, the sky is getting brighter, what's not to like?

Cheers,

I prefer March. Feb is short so pay day comes more quickly.

You talkin' about Jockland there?

I remember a time when it was the tobacco companies that fought tooth and nail to deny the link between their product and anything bad; now it seems big energy interests are playing the same game, only this time, it's not the individual unlucky consumer, but the entire planet, that will pay the price of being hoodwinked.

How can we, as adults, be so stupid/greedy?

You can go back at least a half-century with that.
One of my earliest memories is my mum laughing at people who would drive to somewhere potentially-nice, then sit in their car eating a picnic.

When we lived in the Peak District, in the early 60s, it was common to see someone park their car and wash it with the water from an adjacent stream. The more picturesque spots were full of them.

Snorvey wrote:Cauliflower shortages as extreme weather kills crops

Cauliflower prices have soared and some farmers have suffered financial losses after the destruction of their crops.

The shortages were described as "very concerning" by a spokesman for the Brassica Growers Association
.

And even worse....

Other brassica - including cabbage, broccoli and Brussels sprouts - are also in short supply.

Damn you climate change.

That's the least bad `bad news' I've ever heard.

I can't stand cauliflower, cabbage, broccoli or Brussels sprouts, so it's a matter of supreme indifference to me :D

I'm not sure why or how Greta has become the poster girl for the climate change industry.

But I do wonder at:

- the carbon cost of the boat she'll be sailing in?

- the cost of any rescue mission, should they run into difficulties. (FTR, I hope they don't!)

- how she will receive her education, since presumably she should be at school during the time of the conference. Were she British, her parents could expect a hefty fine if her absence was not approved.

I think you mean English. Our friends in Scotland have never heard of these Orwellian rules or fines and still take their kids out of school for short holidays. The old 10 day a year rule worked and still works very well.

Damn you climate change.

1) This isn't climate change. It is short term weather variations. Which have always happened. And always will.

2) Can anybody ever remember a year farmers were happy? Even when we have perfect growing conditions they sulk because prices are too low.

I assume the boat was not especially commissioned just for this trip? It's the cost of the journey, vs flying, that's being symbolised. The trip itself is supposed to be zero carbon emissions. Of course, if they do hit trouble, that will be a bit of a downer for the message, but at least she's trying to send a serious message.

As for her education - a) she's 16 and so no longer compulsory for her to attend school (in Sweden) and b) she's getting an education very few people of her age could even dream of.

If her actions force world leaders to pay more attention to global warming issues, then I applaud her. As I understand it, her message is very clear: to paraphrase - "Global Warming is a problem for my generation, made and mismanaged by your generation; what are you, the experts and adults in the room, going to do about it?"

Mind you, her boat is going to look a bit out of place, parked next to all the Lear jets of the other attendees
