'Expensive' Fish & Chip Shop
I very rarely get fish and chips but the Mrs and I decided it would be a nice change on Saturday so we went to a shop nearby in Ladbroke Grove.
They didn't have a large cod ready (we were going to share) so the guy said he would have to cook it while we waited which was fine for us as they had seating.
Whilst waiting, a woman in her 30's (guessing) rushed in, got the attention of the assistant and brusquely said 'How much is saveloy and chips?'
'£4.20'
'£4.20?'
'Yep'
'For saveloy and chips?'
'Yes'
*Quizzical look on face*. Walks back to the entrance. Looks back and says 'this is a very expensive shop, you know.' and leaves.
I look at the assistant, bemused. 'Wow', I said.
The assistant beckoned me over and said, 'Come look' and pointed outside.
I walked over and we both watched in amazement as the woman got into a convertible mercedes parked in a bus lane and drove off.

I just like the idea of someone eating saveloy and chips in a Merc
reminds me of the old Pukka Pies adverts

I'm struggling to place "saveloy" here.
Two possibilities that spring to mind are a cabbage or an ex-geography-teacher-turned-barbarian. Neither is something I'd naturally place on a chippie menu.
(as for the Merc inna bus lane ... they really should legislate to grant bus drivers and bus companies total immunity for liability if they just happen to damage the obstruction).

Saveloy, a bright red jumbo 'mystery meat' sausage, popular in chippies

I thought it was well known but perhaps it's a London thing? Here it is (royalty-free photo):

Thanks for the clarification! Its a strange coincidence, but a few days ago while working on the puzzles in the (Glasgow)Herald, (a necessary check to see if I have not completely lost the place mental-wise) I completed the word wheel which ends with a word which has been constructed from the other entries. This word was saveloy - which I had never heard of, and I was a bit worried that I was losing my touch. So its re-assuring to find that I'm (still) OK. The Glasgow salad (chips) also look OK, but I'll give the saveloy a miss.

Yes, that one in the picture isn't sufficiently lurid red, but it has a nice sweat on it...

Looks like you were in the wrong part of Scotland!:
"The Best Saveloy I have ever tasted”
https://www.tripadvisor.co.uk/ShowUserR ... tland.html
Elsewhere does suggest they are rare in Scotland (as rare as a four legged Haggis) and Wiki has some further background:
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Saveloy
Including, to tempt your tastebuds, originally a pig brain sausage particularly associated with Switzerland.

Reminds my of an old saying repeated by my Grandfather about 'trying to be posh' neighbours:
"Another one of them lot - Posh car on t' drive, bugger all in t' freezer!"

£13.80 feeds a family of five every Friday at our local chippy. Tastes great and leaves us stuffed too. And it's in Surrey!
Which reminds me, must leave a tip next time we go...

£11 with a small carton of mushy peas. I didn't think they were hugely overpriced, as the woman obviously did.
Can't imagine they could get away with being much cheaper when you consider what West London rent and rates are like for small high street businesses. It's not like they have the footfall of a McDonalds.

Heh. The chips look nice, but that hot dog calls for a bargepole.

Porcine ringpieces, eyelids and unspeakables, carefully blended with mechanically scavenged "paste", seasoned with a heavy dose of potassium nitrite.
Yum.

Wouldn't want to be too generous with those mushy peas now. After all, the chippy will be operating on a tight 10,000% markup on those...

The British Saveloy is probably the best example of 'processed junk' you can find.
Ask somebody to close their eyes and give them a piece.
But then again, most breakfast cereals are the same. Without milk, they'd all taste and feel like thin strips of cardboard.
Though with less nutrition than cardboard.

People who like sausages and respect the law should watch neither being made.
