Notre-Dame

So sad to watch this elegant Gothic building become gutted. With Chartres (forget the Eiffel Tower - and even without Charles Laughton's Hunchback screaming Sanctuary Sanctuary), it epitomised France.

Amazing to watch the torches of the brave firefighters at height as they try to save the towers.

1 Corinthians 3:13:

each man's work will become evident; for the day will show it because it is to be revealed with fire, and the fire itself will test the quality of each man's work.

What's that supposed to mean? If the "work" is made of flammable material, it'll burn no matter the "quality".

Brings to mind the transience of physical works, even the ancient.

I was in the great Basilica of St Francis in Assisi, both as tourist and as singer in a concert, just before the earthquake. So I saw the great Giotto frescoes and heard the scholarly explanation just before they got partially destroyed. I understand they've done some painstaking restoration on those, to recreate the Big Picture of many interconnected pictures.

Of course it's far too early to say what they'll be able to do with this one. Hopefully something more constructive than perpetual bickering, as in our Parliament building. Being Catholic, it's part of a fabulously wealthy organisation, but I expect they'll wash their hands of any responsibility for it.

Well I do not think that St Paul was literally meaning fire, it is more that man's work, what he does with his life, will one day be tested.

No doubt the poster felt that it was an apt quote for this evening.

To be fair, I refrained from the more obvious fire in the Bible, though it inevitably sprung to mind.

. Genesis 19:24

Then the LORD rained on Sodom and Gomorrah brimstone and fire from the LORD out of heaven,

And of course, the book of Revelations is essentially one big firey judgement from beginning to end.

What does it mean? I think the meaning of the Good Book is open to many interpretations, and demands study as an individual, if one is to truly come to God.

Study His works and doubtless you will find your own meaning.

Whose works?

I sang in one of the greatest of all biblical stories only yesterday. The St Matthew Passion. Of course, a hopelessly confused story: for example, it gives us "Bar Abba" untranslated as a proper name Barabbas, who is then presented as Not Jesus without a hint of irony.

The gospel of Matthew seems pretty straightforward to me: the Last Supper, the betrayal by Judas Iscariot, the purchase of the potters field, mistreatment by the priests led by Caiaphus, Pilate washing his hands of guilt, the freeing of Barabbas by mob demand, whipping and crucifixion, before the veil of the Temple is rent as Christ dies.

It’s the classic tale of the death then resurrection of Jesus. What is confusing to you?

I hear Quasimodo left before the fire started... he'd had a hunch something was up.

Now that rings a bell.

Seriously though, the utter wailing 'iconic' wankspeak coming over the newswires at the moment. I mean, it's only a building ferchrissakes. If Hitler had felt like it, it would have been bombed into dust 80 years ago.

Now, If I was a developer, I'd make a good offer for it and turn it into flats - retaining as many of the period features as possible of course.

You've got to be trolling, surely?

Such a shame that the only thing that can get Brexit off th news is a tragedy like this.

“Only a building”? Is this really what you believe, or are you joking? I hope you are, but the word “Seriously” and the lack of any smileys has me wondering ...

Puzzled by the snarky comments. Notre Dame means so much to the French. Already one individual has committed €100m towards its restoration.

I said the story is confused, as you appear to be.

I even gave one example of a phrase that is usually translated to mean Jesus (in forms such as "son of man" or "son of the heavenly father"), but on one occasion is rendered instead as a proper name in dramatic opposition to Jesus.

Perhaps it was deliberate. After all, the baying crowd telling Pilate "his blood be on us and on our children" looks to me like it might be the moral and intellectual root of Christian antisemitism through the ages, but that only really works properly if you spin the story to hide the fact that the mob was actually calling for Jesus to be released.

Will this be the 3rd or 4th rebuild?

I know the last one was during The Revolution and the guide on the tour round Versailles (10 years ago) told us that the avenue of oak trees had been grown to provide the necessary timbers for the next time.

I wonder if the chainsaws are out there yet?
