This was amusing - some businessmen who'd ordered a £260 bottle of claret were accidentally served a £4,500 one - https://www.standard.co.uk/news/uk/hawk ... 44031.html

But I don't for one second believe that "the customer didn't know and it was only afterwards that one of the managers picked up what had happened."

Just a thought, but who exactly decided that a bottle of wine on the premises was worth £4,500 ? How? What criteria did they use? Who would be stupid enough to order it?

So I guess they would have had insurance?

Maybe they want to stifle any comments to avoid discussion whether it was actually worth £260, let alone £4,500.

After all, merely claiming to have a bottle worth that much is great publicity.

Seems that a quick-thinker on the premises has damage-limitation in mind..... as well as gaining amazing publicity for their restaurant.

Steve PS I have a bottle of white in our chiller which I will sell for 1 million. See? So easy!

It's called a market. You offer a price, someone pays it. Or not.

The undistinguished malbec I just drank (current cost per bottle £5.50) was an indulgence: I could have just had water. The £4500 bottle is an indulgence for a much richer person: same principle, different scale. Just as the £1.38[1] indulgence would've been out of the question at other times of my life, or for those who are poor today (setting aside meaningless politically-motivated definitions of poverty).

[1] One third of a bottle costing £5.50 less 25% 'cos I only ever buy wines when the offer is on.

I thought it was a fairly standard thing in the sort of restaurants that poseurs and "that sort" go to, so when they go in and go "I'll have a bottle of your most expensive wine"...BINGO!

Had a slightly weird on at the weekend, just a pub, gastro pub I guess, but they only sold normal white wine by the glass, then their short wine list, all the whites by the bottle were fizz. I mean, I can see why you'd only sell fizz by the bottle, but are they hoping the good white wine drinkers of the town will quaff the glasses with the higher markup and make more from each bottle? Or are they just embarrassed about what the bottle price would be for a £10 white wine when they're charging £7 for a large glass?

I think what actually happens is that you stick one really expensive bottle on the menu, knowing that you will therefore sell loads of the second-most expensive. I saw this once on a program about the Weisfelds's department store in Glasgow, relating to prams, but it applies all over.

I remember years ago, having had a day at Cartmel races we stopped off on the way home at a pub in Kirkby Lonsdale.

It was a pleasant place, and served good, but not remotely pretentious food. I was therefore surprised to see a bottle of wine at about £250, when all the rest were in the £10 - £20 range (this would have been about 20 years ago).

I asked the waiter about it, and he said there was always one punter who'd had a good day at the races and would say exactly that - "I'll have a bottle of your most expensive wine" - and live to regret it (or perhaps not, who knows?)

Always made me laugh when on Eastenders someone would go into the Queen Vic and ask for a "bottle of your best champagne".

As if anyone has done that in a pub, ever. And the chances of such bottle actually being chilled at the time...?

Scott.

Most of these are reduced before the 25% off.

I managed to get four bottles of Trivento and two bottles of the above Primitivo for a grand total of £25.50, with the 25% offer still intact.

I'd not tried it before, but the above Primitivo is lovely, so I just wanted to say many thanks for allowing me to add another red to my really very small list of 'known-good' options....

Cheers,

Most of these are reduced before the 25% off. The reduced wines sometimes change before the 25% off offer expires so that can change which wines are best value.

Can I join itsallaguess in thanking you for the recommendations. I bought some of the above and have drunk the first bottle over the weekend, it was very nice with bbq chicken and I finished the last glass in the garden in some rare sunshine today. I really enjoyed it and, in line with the thread, rated it better than some French wine I acquired which would cost a fortune in a restaurant.

Now to sample some more of your recommendations!

Just an update if anyone is interested. Tesco are having another 25% off 6 bottles deal. It starts on 27th and runs until 8th July.

These should be woth trying...

https://www.tesco.com/groceries/en-GB/p ... /261058238

https://www.tesco.com/groceries/en-GB/p ... /251295916

https://www.tesco.com/groceries/en-GB/p ... /278363743

Works out at £4.50. The Trivento is particularly good at this price.

https://www.tesco.com/groceries/en-GB/p ... /295221045

Cheap and cheerful at £3.94. Quite decent despite the price. I use this a lot for cooking and have the odd glass while I'm doing so.

Wine offers usually come thick and fast after the first one appears. Now it's ASDA's turn and there are some really good deals. These are the ones that are good wines that stand out from their peers at their normal price. At the reduced price they are in my opinion well worth buying.

https://groceries.asda.com/product/view ... 5672583638

It's less than a fiver.

https://groceries.asda.com/product/view ... 5672393634

£5.30

https://groceries.asda.com/product/view ... 5672503493

https://groceries.asda.com/product/view ... 5672503525

Both at £6. The 3 above are all from the 19 Crimes stable, Their marketing is a bit gimicky but there's nothing wrong with the wines at these prices.

https://groceries.asda.com/product/view ... 5672393673

https://groceries.asda.com/product/view ... 5672803497

Trivento, same as at Tesco. Casillero del D, I prefer the Cabernet Sauvignon but that is £8 most places these are both £4.50.

https://groceries.asda.com/product/view ... 5672803549

Again decent value at £4.50

https://groceries.asda.com/product/view ... 5672393669

This is the Reserva upgrade on the first on this list and still only £6.

These should enable you to stock up on drinkable wine (in my opinion) very cheaply. Sometimes there are good deals on more expensive wine but at present we will have to be patient.

It you find these posts useful please let me know and I'll keep doing them. I've already had positive feedback from a few but I don't want to clog up the board needlessly.

Tesco have still got the 25% off 6 deal on but the other discounts that apply to some of the wines have changed.

These are now the best deals

https://www.tesco.com/groceries/en-GB/p ... /299639940

https://www.tesco.com/groceries/en-GB/p ... /278363743

https://www.tesco.com/groceries/en-GB/p ... /261058238

https://www.tesco.com/groceries/en-GB/p ... /251295916

£4.50

https://www.tesco.com/groceries/en-GB/p ... /299804041

£6,Compare it with the wines from the same stable shown above and decide if it's worth the extra

https://www.tesco.com/groceries/en-GB/p ... /257173026

£6.75. This isn't on any other offer other than the 25% off 6 but is one of my favourite wines at the budget end so I always stock up with a few. Anything from Penfolds is worth a try but they can get very expensive.

Sainsburys have a 25% off 6 deal at present. They aren't usually the cheapest but if you need to stock up these are good value

https://www.sainsburys.co.uk/shop/gb/gr ... serva-75cl

£6, Decent value

https://www.sainsburys.co.uk/shop/gb/gr ... erlot-75cl

Oyster Bay is a very good wine at this price point usually £10-£11, now you can get it for £6.75. Very nice.

That's it for value wines I'm afraid.

Sainsbury's are getting in ahead of the other supermarkets with the next round of 25% off 6 bottles deals. As I've said before Sainsbury's don't usually have the greatest deals but I'll have a look at what's on offer and see if there are any worth buying.

https://www.sainsburys.co.uk/shop/gb/gr ... nillo-75cl

An old favourite at £4.87

https://www.sainsburys.co.uk/shop/gb/gr ... serva-75cl

£6, The reserva verion of the above. Try both and see if you think it's worth the extra. Currently £11 at Tesco or £8 at Morrisons. It shows how variable wine prices can be.

https://www.sainsburys.co.uk/shop/gb/gr ... -noir-75cl

£4.50. A little thin for my taste but my wife and friends love it.

https://www.sainsburys.co.uk/shop/gb/gr ... erlot-75cl

Oyster Bay are very good wines at £6.75 they are excellent. Currently £10.50 at Tesco and £11 at Morrison

https://www.sainsburys.co.uk/shop/gb/gr ... -noir-75cl

Same deal on the pinot Noir. £6.75.

https://www.sainsburys.co.uk/shop/gb/gr ... ernet-75cl

£6.75. One of my personal favourites.

Those should keep you going for a while. If you do try any please report back with your findings. The idea is decent wine at a cheap price. There are better wines if you want to spend a lot more money.

Tesco have also introduced a new 25% off 6 deal which runs until the 26th. Let's see if they can do better than Sainsbury's.

https://www.tesco.com/groceries/en-GB/p ... /250218971

£4.87. Same price as Sainsbury's. Normally £8

https://www.tesco.com/groceries/en-GB/p ... /251295916

Not as good as the Cab Sauv. to my tases but at £4.50 it's good value. Normally £8

https://www.tesco.com/groceries/en-GB/p ... /299639940

A really nice Primitivo for £4.50, It's been cheaper than this in the past but people have caught on to the quality so the price has gone up. Still a great wine at this price. Normally £8

https://www.tesco.com/groceries/en-GB/p ... /299804041

The Reserva Especial version of Casillero Del Diablo Cab Sauv. mentioned above. This will set you back £6 rather than the £4.50 we pay for the other. See if you think it's worth the difference. Normally £10

https://www.tesco.com/groceries/en-GB/p ... /295221045

A real cheapie £4.12 and not bad at all. Drinkable but also my go to wine for cooking.

https://www.tesco.com/groceries/en-GB/p ... /250839063

What I try to do is buy wines that are already on offer before the 25% offer appears. That way we get a double discount. Tim Adams wines are very rarely on offer so the 25% off is as good as it gets. Give yourself a treat and try this at £7.50.

That's it for now but Tesco have a habit of changing the wines on offer before the 25% applies half way through the 25% deal ( I hope that makes sense). Anyway keep your wits about you and check you are getting the wines at the prices I give above. If they change I'll try and up date you on the new best deals but I don't always spot them. If you notice any price changes please let me know.

As expected Tesco have changed the wines on offer before the 25% is applied. Ignore all the ones previously included in my posts and try these

https://www.tesco.com/groceries/en-GB/p ... /299531340

Down from £9 to £7, with the 25% off that's only £5.25

https://www.tesco.com/groceries/en-GB/p ... /254192146

https://www.tesco.com/groceries/en-GB/p ... /274261812

£8 down to £6, you pay £4.50. I prefer the Cab Sauv to the Malbec but at this price both are good.

https://www.tesco.com/groceries/en-GB/p ... /280145262

Down fron £8 to £6.50, you pay £4.87. I prefer the Tempranillo but this is good at the price

https://www.tesco.com/groceries/en-GB/p ... /296704688

Down fron £10 to £8, you pay £6. The Private Reserve version of the one flagged up recently. Try it and see if it's worth the extra pennies.

https://www.tesco.com/groceries/en-GB/p ... /251886407

£7.50 down to £6, you pay £4.50, at this price it's a decent wine

https://www.tesco.com/groceries/en-GB/p ... /261618256

This was on offer at £9 at Sainsbury's or £6.75, Now Tesco have it at £8 so you pay £6. A very nice wine for the money.

https://www.tesco.com/groceries/en-GB/p ... /257863212

The Reserva version of the standard Campo Viejo. Normally £11, now down to £8.50, you pay £6.37

https://www.tesco.com/groceries/en-GB/p ... /257173026

One of my favourites down from £9 to £8, not much discount but you will pay £6. Every little helps.

That's it. At these prices these wines are head and shoulders above the competition.

Sainsbury's are offering 25% off 6 bottles again. Offer ends around 30/9 or 1/10 so only on for a few days. Here's the best deals.

£4.87.

https://www.sainsburys.co.uk/shop/gb/gr ... nillo-75cl

https://www.sainsburys.co.uk/shop/gb/gr ... ignon-75cl

https://www.sainsburys.co.uk/shop/gb/gr ... erlot-75cl
Not as good as the Cab Sauv. in my opinion but at less than a fiver it's still good.

£5.06
https://www.sainsburys.co.uk/shop/gb/gr ... -noir-75cl
Try this, I find it lacks a little body but a lot of my friends like it a lot.

£6.75
https://www.sainsburys.co.uk/shop/gb/gr ... -noir-75cl
Oyster Bay at this price is great value

https://www.sainsburys.co.uk/shop/gb/gr ... ernet-75cl
One of my favourite budget wines. Penfolds do a fantastic range, this is their cheapy but you can tekll it comes from a quality producer.

Those should keep busy. Don't be surprised if the other supermarkets follow with their own 25% off deals. If you spot them before I do please let me know and I'll try to pick out the best deals.
