LOL, the past really is another country, isn't it? I suspect that most of us have done that sort of thing.

Now, if only I could remember why I changed my computer shutdown settings from Off to Hibernate two months ago, I'd be a happy man. Some ingenious logic to it, I'm sure. I can't figure out how to reverse it, but hey, I expect it must have been a good idea at the time?

the past really is another country, isn't it?

A few weeks ago. having spent hours and hours most weekdays evenings for several months transferring information one at time for approximately 4000 records from an old database (desktop only) to a new one (cloud only) and finally completed, the weariness must've got to me because I inadvertently deleted the field containing all the information on the new database.

The cloud database (Airtable) enables me to take snapshots of the base, also does so automatically every so often, but I hadn't done a manual snapshot for some time and the latest automatic was a day or so old. With no way of know which records I had transferred, i was resigned to having to start again but needing time off I before getting going was also a mistake. because what i didn't discover until it was too late was that on the Airtable database there is an un-delete function which works up to 7 days after any deletion.

Having started to redo, have done about 500, I have found a few mistakes so far so I regard the deletion as an opportunity for accuracy.

A problem is if not handled sufficiently well by the lawyers it may set an unintended precedent for the future. Where would the right place for two Turkish teams reaching a future final slated for Wembley be to play?

How about Athens? :)

so what's been translated as "state of calamity", and what would it convey to a Portuguese speaker?

Funnily enough I saw some speculation in a local paper that Britannia Ferries might take advantage of Portugal's Green status and start sailing ferries to Porto. Sounded potentially much more civilised than messing about in airports. Though that was before Porto got blighted by some football match.

Have the gunboats that sailed to Jersey, now captured Brittany and its Ferry Company?

30 hours travelling through the Bay of Biscay to Porto doesn't appeal to me, but might shake up the football fans!

Happy sailing to all.

Poots. Now there's a name to conjure with. Not as thunderous as trumps, I'll grant you, but just as likely to empty the room. :?

I really do think it's time that Sky News stopped showing such gratuitous footage on their news-channels...

Yes, I've often considered skiing in Scotland as more like downhill water-skiing  though I have had some really good days

We've tended to go to the other extreme - mostly Val Thorens (highest altitude resort in Europe).
Daydreams for a moment on carving fresh lines in the powder on Glacier Peclet (about 3300m)..............bloody cold though

I've always had the (disturbed?) notion that was how all asset values were determined.
Based on the idea that prices are always subject to pressure, it was the ambition of those with the capacity to foresee how the 'herd' was likely to move next and then act to precipitate that movement until the 'herd' became tired/mistrustful of that direction of travel and became susceptible to a change. Isn't that what trading is about

Yes, it'll take our generation a while to get used to China taking the world-leadership position occupied by the US in our formative years. I wonder how long it'll be before that becomes the norm in all whole-world organisations?

The McGurk effect -

The McGurk effect is a perceptual phenomenon that demonstrates an interaction between hearing and vision in speech perception.

The illusion occurs when the auditory component of one sound is paired with the visual component of another sound, leading to the perception of a third sound.

The visual information a person gets from seeing a person speak changes the way they hear the sound.

Here's a brilliant example of the McGurk effect in action -

reading backwards (as I do)
Greenspan adds a caveat about the death cross: it’s typically followed by a so-called golden cross,
Whaaaat??? Alan Greenspan, former chairman of the Federal Reserve believes in this hokum?
Thankfully not - it's "Mati Greenspan" - no relation (I assume)
