Take it steady, then. As the old road safety ads on the radio used to say, we 'd rather be talking to you than about you. ;)

Late update: road outside our house is completely covered by smashed bits of tree. Not very large bits, just a helluva lot of them.

My make-do shed roof is still in place you'll be glad to know.

Big question is.... do I risk going out to get my Sunday paper?

Very gusty here in west Berkshire
I was supposed to be going to Didcot today for an amateur radio 'rally', but having checked the trains I've decided against it. Lots of stuff cancelled and the services left are going to be overcrowded. Bit unhappy as I was looking forward to a few hours browsing loads of electronic/radio 'junk' (well, it takes all sorts..)

In Didcot earlier -

The final part of Didcot coal-fired power station has been demolished...
The 655ft (199.5m) chimney, one of the tallest structures in the country, was brought down at 07:30 GMT on Sunday.

They could have just removed a few bricks from the bottom and let nature do the rest

Avanti West Coast trains say no trains will run north of Preston. By my reckoning that's just about where it leaves the (very serious) southern amber warning area and goes into the (namby-pamby) northern yellow.

It's all about perception.

West Scotland British Transport Police have issued a clear warning, asking people to be especially aware of the risk to pets during these very high winds -

Absolutely brutal band of rain passing over, with thunder and gale force winds
Looking at the rainfall radar it peaked at over 32mm/hr - highest level

I see that a BA flight from JFK to LHR has made it in a record 4 hr 56 min for a subsonic flight, thanks to a 200mph tail wind.

Sky news just reported on that but they said it was from London to New York!

I prefer TJH's version

No, but the stuff falling from the sky is wetting us.

On my way to the loch this morning I spotted a few overturned bins littering the street (yes - our council empties them on Sundays), and water in the fields was lapping up to the edge of the road. When I got to the loch I found that the work party had decided to call it a day - there was a good wave on the loch and a stiff, gusting, breeze - so nobody was keen to take a boat out to deliver supplies (timber, tools and hard core) around the loch, and the paths were under water. Our tarpaulin-covered bale of straw was safely tied down, and we didn't receive an unwelcome visitor in the shape of an overturned trampoline - as we have in the past. So I would say that in west-central Scotland, the weather is nothing exceptional - just a very wet, windy winter day. However I see that parts of the central highlands are forecast to get heavy snow showers tomorrow. Thankfully this is not the forecast for our southern brethren, otherwise …. (In the cause of brotherly amity, I'll miss out the rest of my planned response)

Heh. He's right about the met office crying wolf (and we've got a weather warning for tomorrow, too). Just been out at what should have been the height of the storm, and ... damp squib. My route took me up some exposed places - like across the viaduct - as well as through lots of trees. Couple of squalls and gusts, nothing to write home about, not even any debris big enough for a direct hit to have hurt.

As I write I can hear the rain. Sounds worse than it felt.

Heh. Today is more like real weather. After a bright, sunny morning, we now have a stronger wind than any time yesterday, and the stuff coming from the clouds is white.

There has been a fair bit of the white stuff in Central Scotland today - down to low levels, but most of it has melted. And its a bit breezy. But it didn't deter my wife and her ladies' walking group this morning, although apparently the walking part of the group was somewhat depleted - my wife and one other walked, while others arrived by more congenial transport modes and met them at the coffee shop terminus. All returned in the congenial transport. I was not tempted to go out on my bike.

We lost our electricity at 1600 on Sunday. Just as I was preparing dinner. It wasn't fixed until 25 hours later. Nothing unusual given the circumstances.
It did hammer home how completely unprepared I am for a genuine disaster, should it strike. I regret not recording all those Ray Mears programmes of yesteryear.

How would you re-watch them with no power?

They're probably all on youtube.

Yup. Probably only two days from complete anarchy. Depending on what was switched off. I mean, if it was power and internet, that would be bad, and joking aside about people rioting if they didn't have internet for a day, clean water is the key, if your supply of water stopped, you've got three days to source a decent water supply, after that you're toast, depending on how much drinkable stuff you can loot of course.

Do we get a prize if we spot an article about Storm Dennis that doesn't mention Dennis the Menace?

Well, it's snowing again in the softy south west if that makes you feel any better. Incoming at 50 mph, with a 250 mph jetstream pulling it all along. It'll make a change from yesterday's hail, I suppose?

Yeah, we had that until 40 minutes ago. It's heading your way. Good luck, and don't waste good money on sun screen.
