Re: Wrong pronunciation
In my case it wasn't an intentional 'witticism' -I genuinely thought it was tit-leist !

I had a shower this morning I'll have you know!
And I always thought it was tit-leist until I heard a golfer who'd know pronounce it title-ist, only a few years ago.

Daahling, I never, never go into any hotel room until I've checked its fung schway. Mind you, I think you can get cream for that these days?

Re: Wrong pronunciation
Today I spent 30 mins writing down the phonetic (think that's the word) pronunciation of most of the place names on Anglesey and other areas for a lovely couple from Yorkshire. I also taught them how to say please and thank you. They've promised to do the same for us if ever we visit their area

I'm not sure phonetics are the main problem with Anglesey. It's more about raw complexity when the slow train stops at Llanfairpwllgwyngyllgogerychwyrndrobwllllantysiliogogogoch.

Ah yes, from the Chinese 'Schway' meaning 'sense', and 'Fung' meaning 'more money than'

When we used to go to the pantomime in Cardiff, many years ago, they had a song about it.
It has never been a problem remembering how to say it.

Easy for me as I am Welsh, however for others ...

Some years ago , Middlesbrough FC were playing a European match in Switzerland. Throughout the game the commentator referred to the home team as "Basil".

Basle doesn't have an anglicised version. Whereas "Paris" (pron pariss) is the anglicised version of the French word "Paris" (pron Par-eee).

If you can find it, Victor Borge should be considered definitive on the subject.

...which leads to the obvious question, how do you pronounce Borge?

The long name was (probably) a 19th Century invention to attract tourists anyway.
Bid like Beddgelert and the faithful hound story, with the fake grave erected by a local landlord...

You see that when a smaller country has a bigger neighbour. Really noticed it when crossing into Switzerland from being resident in Germany: everything was about ripping off German tourists!
With the Welsh it seems often to be poking gentle fun at the English. Their great 20th-century bard gave us Llareggub hill.
