I was wondering how many 1970s style jokes we'd get. :)

I remember seeing the film, on the TV, at some point, but I don't ever recall it being available in the cinema. My mates and I would have certainly gone.

Slough.

"Thunderbirds was filmed at APF's studios on the Slough Trading Estate between 1964 and 1966"

It really had to be Slough, didn't it?

Far too much modern American comedy is ruined for me by excessive and inappropriate use of canned laughter. Esp Big Bang Theory. There has been some copying of this in uk recently e.g. Not Going Out.
"Hi Bob" HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA
"Oh, hi Nancy" HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA
That's NOT funny! It's not even an attempt to be funny! You seriously think we're going to laugh at that because you smothered it in canned laughter? Gets right up my nose it does.

However on a positive note I'd add the netflix Sabrina to the must see list. The Yanks can still do great comedy when they try.

because it is. slapstick silliness at its best. WAY superior to the extremely tedious and definitely unfunny Benny Hill.

About 20 years ago my cousin who now lives in America brought his second wife over to meet us all. His first wife had absolutely no sense of humour and didn't get English humour at all. After experiencing wife No.1 we were a little apprehensive about No.2, we needn't have worried. She found some cds of Billy Connolly and apart from the odd bit lost in translation thought they were fantastic. She took them home with her and from then on in they based their circle of friends on those that enjoyed Mr. C and quickly dropped those who thought he was vulgar, disgusting and certainly not for them.
She said her best Christmas pressie was the complete collection of Auf Weidersehn Pet so obviously some humour does travel. Bye the bye although she's American her parents are Japanese :)

Does anyone remember "Whirligig " with Humphrey Lestocq and Mr Turnip? My most abiding memory of the time was watching Oxford's 8 sinking in the 1951 Boat Race as they negotiated the first bend. Today, the race is held when the Thames is like a mill pond . Takes all the fun out of it.

You must be older than me. We didn't have television back then, and I was probably at school on the day.

I hate canned laughter but after a while I can 'tune it out'

American humo(u)r ?
Seinfeld - always good, often brilliant. Have been binge-watching on Prime
Loved 'Married with Children' when it was on UK TV - seemed to be subversive compared with the awful 'morality tale' bland US sitcoms
What about the animated stuff? Simpsons and Family Guy
Stand-ups? Bill Hicks, Jerry Sadowitz (OK he's a bit Scottish too)?

Be careful what you wish for, here is a slice of Big Bang without the laughter track...weird.
