Three little letters

#250693

Postby bungeejumper » September 10th, 2019, 11:04 am

Unaccustomed as I am to reading the BBC's pop junk reports, my attention was caught by this one. (https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/newsbeat-49645508 ) It seems that Taylor Swift has tried to sue Microsoft for calling its now ill-fated (and foul-mouthed) AI chatbot Tay - which she says infringes her universal rights to the exclusive use of her own name.

Not "Taylor", please note, but "Tay", which apparently she has never used even as a Twitter tag, never mind anywhere else. Not "Tay", as in a Scottish river or a kind of soft fruit. Not "Tay Law", which just happens to be a rival firm of lawyers in Houston. (Good luck with enforcing that one, ma'am. :) ) Just "Tay". In case she ever feels like using the three letters again. I expect another lawsuit in respect of Swift will be along next week.

I can see where this is going. First, Easyjet cornered the market in Easy names; then McDonalds nailed not just food establishments calling themselves McDonalds but also MacDonalds, and probaby MacFisheries for all I know.

This is too good a bandwagon to miss. I hearby give due, immediate and universal notice that any time anyone on this board, or anywhere else, mentions the word bun, I want a piece.

Thank you.

BJ

It's not just people that have been the subject of attempts to prevent the exclusive use of their name.

I give you: Iceland.

MacFisheries was a long-established fish trader owned by Lever Bros and my maternal great-grandfather owned fish shops in Chester which were leased to them. Unilever may well still own the trademark and also Mac Food Centres and MacMarkets under which the shops also traded. Unlike other 'Mac' disputes steamrollered by Big Mac, Unilever would be an altogether more formidable opponent.

BnC v the Engineers

(From TLF: "BNC means something to us engineers. You may well find one dangling on the end of a coax cable, or the female equivalent (usually) on an instrument panel.")

I was going to say - surely 50 ohm if its a BNC, in my experience. But on checking I have found that there is indeed a 75 ohm version (and possibly a 95 ohm version). I live and learn!

And what is more, the village of Leverburgh from whence the original Mac Fisheries sprung, still exists on the Island of Harris in the Outer Hebrides.

I honestly thought for a few seconds that this was straight from the Daily Mash. Unbelievable.

God help anyone called Smith who opens a book store! :-)

Oh dear , Capital punishment ?
I'm used to using R any way, but 50R and 75R wouldn't mean much to most people
And I'm lazy with the shift key.

As a very junior academic, It was my task to prepare tutorial questions for a lecture course. The course lecturer warned me - "I want no sex in my tutorials". I was a bit taken aback - how could I possibly have sex in a physics tutorial?. Then I discovered he was referring to secs - he wanted me to use SI units throughout - i.e s for seconds - and not secs. So I'm all for SI units.
But what's wrong with ohm? - "Where the character set is limited to ASCII, the IEEE 260.1 standard recommends substituting the symbol ohm for Ω."
I suppose BS 1852 proposes R - but I agree that R would probably be less universally clear.

I'm just used to the standard component marking where the multiplier(?) replaces the decimal point (for obvious reasons - points get lost on marked components, and copied circuit diagrams)
So 4k7, 5M6 , 10M, 100R, 1R8 etc

And anyway Csearle, reckon ohm should be capitalised ? I've just checked, and computer says no. You may have been getting at something else
