I had loads of problems with Sports Direct 'Karrimor' walking boots, which were crap.

That's definitely worth knowing. I found plenty of SS's on Amazon and at various shops around London. As far as I could tell they were the original model but worth checking before buying.

In the unlikely event I tried running again, most of my route is tarmac until I get down to the River Kennet, then it's grass towpath

sg31 wrote:If you are running on soft surfaces like grass you can get away with normal trainers but pounding the roads does jar.

I'm actually doing some barefoot running. Oftentimes on smooth tarmac. But that's on rural country droves in the Fens, i.e. no drive ways and kerbs, with very very infrequent (sometimes zero) traffic.

Sometimes I'm barefoot on grass, and firm peat in the woods too. Barefoot on smooth tarmac is fine. You don't get the jarring since your style adjusts to one of minimalised pain and hence impact. FWIW I'll be 52 in a few months.

Of course I wouldn't run a marathon like that. Indeed I doubt I'll ever bother training for a marathon. Doing about 12 - 14k or so suits me fine. I don't really have any target agenda, other than keeping fit and enjoying the buzz.

That's how it could be still. But people want to try to "fix" what they conceive as problems with money and technology.

I doubt many people would recommend barefoot running. I know the fens, I lived near Conningsby for a period, it's not like town running but I doubt I would have got far without proper trainers even so. Maybe you have better style than I do,which wouldn't take much doing.

I was never a runner in the purest sense but I was a maniac who ran far too much. I made up for my like of skill by doing massive distances in training. 60 miles p.w. normally and I think I did over 90 p.w. at times. Totally idiotic but I was a running addict.

In the case of HYD he's bought decent trainers so hopefully he is well set to increase his distances as he gets fitter.

Seeing as I’ve made that promise, can anyone confirm? I would especially like to hear from those who say ‘No’.

Thanks,

HYD

Well, how's it going?

Yeah. You've got the gear, you've had the encouragement, what's happening?

I would advise against any kind of exercise. This 3km then 5km then whatever just smacks of competitiveness. Pretty soon you will want to do it faster and/or longer and while you are trying to graph it you will drop dead at your keyboard. Worse ways to go I suppose. :)

I was always competetive when I was running. I wasn't interested in beating other people just myself. Beating my previous best of getting a longer distance was such a high.

I wish I could do it now.

Funny, I never got that feeling. As soon as I started running - usually around the local university campus - my mind would go a complete blank, presumably because of the adrenaline effect. So I'd find myself 30/40 minutes later with no real idea where I'd been?

That was what I told the magistrates, anyway

I find that the days when I can get back home, without needing to sit on a bench for a few minutes, are quite encouraging. The bench is at about the mile and a half point of a 2 mile round walk. The first mile takes about 20 minutes, but the second is nearer half an hour without the rest. There is more uphill on the way home.

I bet you take ages if you stop off at the pub halfway.

Only during opening hours. Sadly it's about 8am when I pass the New Inn and the Poacher.
