The Best Supermarket Red Wine Deals.

#267042

Postby sg31 » November 25th, 2019, 3:32 pm

I've been running a series of posts on the subject in the 'Chateau Cock Up' thread but it's been suggested I open a new thread rather than piggy back on the existing thread.

The intention is to find decent quality wines that don't break the bank. I'm not a great fan of wine manufacturers like Lindemans or Hardy's so don't expect to see those.

Sainsbury's have just introduced a 25% off 6 bottles offer which runs from today to 15th December. Tesco's already have their own 25% off deal which I looked at last week. ASDA will not be far behind, I'm not sure about Morrisons.

Here's the best deals at Sainsbury's,

£6.37
https://www.sainsburys.co.uk/shop/gb/gr ... erlot-75cl
Normally £11, a great buy at this price

£4.87
https://www.sainsburys.co.uk/shop/gb/gr ... -noir-75cl
A decent Chilean Pinot Noir for not a lot of money

https://www.sainsburys.co.uk/shop/gb/gr ... -7953670-p
A good Argentinian Malbec. Normally £8

I keep coming back to Sainsbury's Taste the Difference Primitivo (https://www.sainsburys.co.uk/webapp/wcs ... rence-75cl), and it suits me very well. Quite a lot of body, warm, smooth and spicy. The wine's not bad either. :D

Normally at £7, often at £6, but either way it's a goer at 25% off those prices.

The Languedoc red (https://www.sainsburys.co.uk/shop/gb/gr ... rence-75cl) is also decent @ £6.50, although I'd agree with the reviewer who said it tastes better the day after you open it. A rather unorthodox blend of grapes, which tends to vary from year to year, but solid. The Languedoc white's got a strong tangy character, too. If you want something fresh, dry and light to go with your seafood, this isn't it. Good, though.

ASDA are quick to follow Tesco and Sainsbury's. They don't give any indication of when the offer will end.

£6.75
https://groceries.asda.com/product/pino ... 0001358099
Normally £12. This ia an interesting one, I like it, my wife finds it undrinkable, I think it must be her uneducated tastebuds (she say's it's mine that are uneducated) I don't mind either way it just means more for me. :D

£6
https://groceries.asda.com/product/view ... 0002993616
This is great value at this price, full of fruit, maybe lacks complexity but a very nice drink. The blurb mentions sweetness, it isn't it's dry. Not 'fetch the enamel off your teeth' dry but dry enough.

https://groceries.asda.com/product/all- ... 0034704421
Another from the same brand that won't disappoint.

https://groceries.asda.com/product/view ... 0115832116
The Reserva Especial of Casillero Del D. Normally £10

https://groceries.asda.com/product/rioj ... 0000553142
This is the Reserva version of the Campo V mentioned below. See which you think is better value.

£4.87[/u]
https://groceries.asda.com/product/rioj ... ja/9157601
Very nice Rioja at this price. One of my everyday wines, usually around £8

£4.50
https://groceries.asda.com/product/cabe ... on/1815329
This is the best of the Casillero Del D wines at this price point in my opinion. Another one that is a good everyday wine that won't break the bank. Normally £8

https://groceries.asda.com/product/pino ... ir/9157624
This got a mention in the Sainsbury's post. Buy at ASDA and save an extra 37p

Those should help stock your wine cellar ready for Christmas. If you don't like one of them don't worry, you can always serve it to a guest you don't like.

My fav at the moment is

https://www.aldi.co.uk/aimone-italian-r ... 0227063700

So good for a fiver. Keep trying to get it locally but always sold out. Got a few bottles in Devon but will have to import more.

As an aside I went to the Aldi site to get the link and for the first time ever on the internet I was put in a queue (got a ticket number and everthing!)

Oh and sg31 not sure if it just me but got a 404 on all your tesco links

I've got loads of Tesco vouchers that need using up as I no longer have a Tesco nearby - the big supermarket in this area is Sainsbury's
I used to get my fave Marzemino del Veneto (I think??) from Sainsbury's but haven't seen it for years
Having just checked they do a Marzemino Trentino - would this be roughly the same ? I don't have a refined palate.....

Update on Tesco deals due to broken links. This is the Tesco post I did previously on the other thread.

Tesco are at it again. 25% off 6. I'm fully stocked but if you need a top up here are the highlights as far as reds are concerned.

£7.50
https://www.tesco.com/groceries/en-GB/p ... /304399039
Let's splash out. This will challenge yor tastebuds. A proper wine that would benefit from a year or two more in the bottle. The tannin needs to mellow a little but very drinkable. I had to have a second bottle a few days after the first to appreciate the complexity. If you like it buy a dozen and hide them away for a year or two.

£6
https://www.tesco.com/groceries/en-GB/p ... /296704688
A nice Argentinian Malbec. Normally £10, now £6.

£5.25
https://www.tesco.com/groceries/en-GB/p ... /251277604
At this money this is great value. Normally £9

https://www.tesco.com/groceries/en-GB/p ... /295235927
Try this for a change to the wines I normally recommend. Normally £9

£4.87
https://www.tesco.com/groceries/en-GB/p ... /250218971
Always reliable. A good everyday wine.

£4.50
https://www.tesco.com/groceries/en-GB/p ... /254192146
My favourite Casillero Del Diablo

https://www.tesco.com/groceries/en-GB/p ... /274261812
Chilean Malbec from Cas Del D. My taste buds prefer the one above. Yours might prefer this.

https://www.tesco.com/groceries/en-GB/p ... /251886407
A drinkable Chilean Pinot Noir. It won't break the bank.

Wow some wine experts here. So My wife loves White Zinfandel(which as you know is pink) due to her preference for sweet wines(I don't, but it has an interesting history due to a fermentation accident) and wondered what you could suggest as an alternative. She doesn't care for fizzy rose but more biased towards the fruity sweet side(yuck).

Anything I should look out for? Thx.

I really know nothing about wines.

However at less that £4 per bottle we find the Baron St. Jean (both the white and red) from Aldi very drinkable.

Friend tells me that the problem with cheap wines is not necessarily that they are not nice but that they may be quite variable from batch to batch. Fortunately we are not good enough to tell the difference!

If you like Spanish Sherry of the Fino type, the Tesco brand is about the cheapest (one litre bottles) and very drinkable. Morrisons is not bad either. Sainsbury's is quite un-Fino like. They also seem to be generally poor (to my taste) across the board with southern European food stuff.

Regards,
ep

Try some of the wines I cover at £4.50. It's not a lot extra to spend and you might find you like them. They are generally on sale at double the price you pay and will have more complexity and depth of flavour.

The wine each of us chooses to drink is very personal. I won't ever tell anyone what they should drink. I've got friends who drink medium sweet reds that they buy for much more money than my recommendations and they love them. To my taste they are gaggingly sweet and repulsive. If they are happy that's all that matters.

All I try to do is find wines I like and then play the supermarket discounts to buy them as cheaply as possible. I dislike wines produced in chemical factories like Hardys, Lindemans and Blossom Hill. There is obviously a market for those wines, I just don't like them personally.

To get the best deals from the supermarkets it's necessary to buy 6 bottles at once. That doesn't mean they need to be the same wine, it's generally 6 bottles of any type above £5 (starting price). You can buy all 6 for £27- £30.

Feeling hard done to in Scotland where our nanny state judges we can't be trusted with multiple offers on alcohol. (Though a discounted box of 24 cans of Stella isn't disallowed - go figure).

Sometimes the per-bottle price is reduced to give us some discount, but not in this case at Tesco.

I feel for you. How did your nanny state get away with this?

I don't understand the system in detail, I thought it was just minimum pricing per unit of alcohol but stopping supermarkets doing special offers just penalises customers who are drinking more expensive drinks.

Maybe I'm missing the point in which case I'm happy to be corrected.

The minimum unit pricing law came in more recently, and doesn't affect anything I buy.

However a few years earlier they brought in a "no multiple offers" law, which makes much less sense, and is still in place.

I think it calls for a revolution.

Have the new regulations had any impact on the Scottish alcohol problem?

Well overall consumption has gone down. Not sure whether any further impact has been shown.

Anyway, back to the wine...
