Lockdown? What lockdown?

Postby Clitheroekid » September 16th, 2020, 4:41 pm

I don't suppose it would have made much difference to this chap - a remarkable achievement, and excellent photos, some of which are almost worthy of the pick of the day thread!

It must be quite difficult to adjust to humdrum domestic life after such an adventure.

Apologies for replying to my own post, but this is the result of the trip, which I really enjoyed browsing. There are some truly brilliant photographs, and the Scottish Fools in particular are in for a treat :D

I walked and blogged John O'Groats to Land's End. 1,200 miles over 3 months.

Looks like I need to re-think the challenge but I'm not sure I have got a spare 5 years!

Hmmm. If you're rising to a challenge set by someone else, perhaps "round Ireland with a fridge" would be one to top?

It took him 5 years to complete the trip, and I reckon it will take me at least as long to view all of the brilliant photos :(

Didn't he cheat and take the beer out? A long time since I read that book.

Yes I've been following him on Twitter and Facebook since he crossed the border into Scotland a few years ago, it's been amazing. I missed the south and west coasts of England, plus all of Wales, unfortunately.

If you look at his route map, the distances involved are stupendous. Just the coast of Essex, for example, is nearly 600km. And the west coast of Scotland about 4000km!

Actually he went home for a few months for lockdown, said he felt uncomfortable carrying on under the circumstances.

Great effort and incredible pics!

In the video his kids looked quite young
- I can only imagine the response I would have got if I'd suggested a similar adventure when mine were that size

Depends on the granularity of the measurement (do you measure around every creek and crevice, rock, subatomic particle etc)

Yes I know it could be infinite if you measure it, but this is his actual walking distance. He stuck to the coast as much as possible (not necessarily on paths) and took the first land crossing (i.e. bridge) across rivers, estuaries and other inlets.

There was a short feature on Quintin's walk on the One Show last night https://www.bbc.co.uk/iplayer/episode/m ... w-22092020

About 16 minutes in.

In the second link from CK, the author tells us that he started on 17 April 2015 and finished on 5 September 2010. A bit of a time traveller. Did he use a Tardis?

Proportion-wise, that map looks like one of the old BBC weather maps.

Thanks Scott. As someone said, the photo galleries themselves are fantastic and repay a lot of digging to find everything. I knew nothing of this. How did he survive financially? Was the trip sponsored? Did he have any support? What were the logistics and how did they work?

From what I've picked up, mainly from following him on Twitter for the last few years:
- His 'day job' is photography. By doing the walk a few weeks on and a few weeks off, he was able to get funds by selling photographs.
- I'm pretty sure it wasn't actually sponsored, but he seemed to do the odd promotional video for Canon cameras.
- No support, he took public transport to/from the sections of the walk. Obviously a challenge in itself to remote parts of Scotland.
- He mostly did wild camping. Posted packages of food ahead to where he could pick them up on the way. Occasional B&Bs and staying with acquaintances. (His batteries for cameras/phone/drone etc only lasted about 5 days between charges).

There's a book coming, naturally.

Scott.
