Prince Philip latest
All news channels:
Nick Anchor Prince Philip, who has been feeling unwell for a few days, has been taken by car to hospital as a precaution, according to his doctors. It is not COVID related, and the Prince remains in good spirits. We go over to our Royal Medical Court Correspondent, Phillipa Page for the very latest. Phillipa.
PP Nick, the very latest is that according to Royal Sources, the Prince is now in hospital.
Nick and do we know if he is in good spirits?
PP Yes, we understand that, according to persons close to the Prince, he remains in good spirits
Nick is there any news about the condition of the Prince?
PP Yes Nick, I can exclusively reveal that it is NOT, I repeat NOT, COVID related
Nick wow that is interesting. And also do we know if he was taken by ambulance?
PP Nick I have just received confirmation that in fact the Prince was driven to hospital by car, and NOT in an ambulance
Nick and had the Prince been feeling unwell for a few days?
PP Yes, in fact that does appear to be the case, and…hold on… (cups earpiece)… OK we are getting the breaking news that this move to the hospital is a precautionary measure only
Nick Fascinating stuff Phillipa. And do we know if the Prince remains in good spirits?

Re: Prince Philip latest
Assuming no cause for alarm, does he get a telegram from his missus later this year, or would that seem too impersonal?

Haha.
Well, when he recovers, you can be sure he won't be going on Oprah to bleat about it

I agree- a non story.
He's nearly 100.
That is a really good innings although Captain Tom who was also in hospital until recently achieved more.

Apropos the old codger ...
If a king's wife is called queen (most recently, the late mother of the present queen), why isn't Philip called king? Surely it's equivalent?

It was decided at or before the time of the wedding that he wouldn't be a King. Something about what he let slip to Mountbatten or Churchill, I think, which was amusing in itself but I simply can't recall what it was. Was covered in a recent documentary (I think it was recent but could have been a repeat for all I know).

In principle, I believe he could have been a King Consort, which sounds rather like a cigarette. He'd have been following Albert's example if he'd been called a Prince Consort, but I imagine he probably thought that sounded too much like an oil tanker.
So they all settled on just plain Prince. As you do.

I believe it tells us about the way gender was viewed thoughout history. A "king" would always be seen as more powerful - because he's a bloke - so one could not expect a queen to be in charge if him indoors had that more powerful title.
Prince Consort is only a buoy therefore less powerful

Yes, he just floats around not doing very much.
He can now float around doing what he likes on a permanent basis but seriously he has clearly been a huge support for HM over many years and as a sort of Royalist, I think we can be grateful for that. Their marriage was certainly much more enduring and apparently successful than many of their family's.
