Happy Days

#402657

Postby simsqu » April 8th, 2021, 4:40 pm

I’m in my study this morning, pottering. My wife calls up “I’m going out for a walk with Carol.” That’s not her real name. Her real name is Sue.
“OK see you later” I shout back. That’s fine: I’ll make myself a nice fresh coffee in about half an hour and sit quietly in the warm kitchen munching on prunes. Lovely.

Ten minutes later the doorbell rings and I hear female voices on the doorstep: my wife and Carol conversing. The door remains open and the conversing continues. Why don’t they go off for the walk I was promised? A cold damp miasma starts curling around my ankles from the open door. The conversing continues. Now I can hear more voices. I am summoned. It is another couple who were just passing and stopped by to say hello. Now that households can mix outside, my wife invites them in to have coffee on the patio.

They all troop through the kitchen, giving me coffee orders, and settle down on the patio. I then spend the next 20 minutes juggling with a bunch of small coffee pots, hot milk, biscuits, macaroons etc and once they are all sated, I join them on the patio with the dregs of the now lukewarm coffee pot on the patio. A cold, damp, biting artic blast drills its way into my bones, and I listen to talk of vaccines, second vaccines, hospital appointments, scans, Chris Witty, blood clots and root canal treatment.

Well it's eased so that people can visit other people in their gardens, which appears to be an excuse for all and sundry, who you spent most of your time avoiding in the olden days, to assume that you are now going to be over the moon about them dipping their bread in your gravy, so to speak

I'm not so sure about that. Having driven yesterday from Wiltshire to Reading, to Farnham in Surrey then Wokingham and back to Wiltshire and seen the rising amount of traffic out and about, I suggest we now have "LINO".

(Edit due to the curious phenomenon where I type a perfect post then between pressing the "Submit" button and releasing it, a glaring error inserts itself into my text. Grrr.)

Lockdown in name only

cf: BRINO

(Brexit in name only)

The other side of that coin being NKIABN.

It's an abbreviation for linoleum, a floor covering made from linseed oil and various fillers, with antiseptic properties and invented in the 19th century...

Or, it could be an acronym for "lockdown in name only"!

A cold damp miasma starts curling around my ankles from the open door

A cold wind is curling around my ankles neck and hands from the open door. Our central heating boiler is being renewed and the installers have the front door wide open; they wander in and out the movement keeping themselves warm, whilst I sit here freezing. As does Mrs Bnc in another room, with only a puppy nearby to emit heat.

In an attempt to get some work done today by colouring a plan, wondering how to sharpen a coloured pencil with blunt pencil sharpener; the neighbours cannot help (I have been out asking around), my stanley knife is in an inaccessible room.

Ah ha! As luck would have it, Mrs Bnc having emerged from her freezer for something tells me she has a pencil sharpener, not one but two. But they are in another inaccessible room. I suggest she asks the installer to move his things out of the way. Wonderful question she calls out to the installer "is it safe for me to go into that room to get a pencil sharpener?"

When she brings it to me, she remarks how warm my room is. Which it was before she opened the door and let more of the cold wind in.

No kissing indoors after breakfast nowadays?

That's more or less what I got when I googled it (or at least, it will be now!)
