I often experience a variant of this that I call 'Die Wand'* where I see in the distance someone I love - most often my beloved grand-daughters - looking desolate and lost (not necessarily in danger) and wanting me to help them, but something (the Wall; treacle; ..) prevents me and I cannot even call to them.
* after the German film where a transparent wall in the Austrian Alps that suddenly appears and separates a women from the rest of civilisation.
