Regional accent quiz

Postby ThirdWay » November 10th, 2016, 9:06 pm

Can you understand this funny regional accent?

The BBC helpfully provides subtitles in case it's too difficult.

Hmmm, a tough one, that. I think she might have said "quickerly" right at the end, but the rest of it was utterly incomprehensible to me.

Yes, every word. I don't think she has a strong accent at all. The only British accent I struggle with is strong Scottish accent, where I have to tune in for the first couple of sentences.

I don't know because the BBC is still using the obsolete Flash which I long ago deleted from my system

I can understand him, but it's hard work following what he's saying.

Your Northern Oirish yoof was an easy one.

You must listen to this famous 'Strabane' one:

I can just about manage that. I find broad Glaswegian 'difficult'
I just nod and smile usually

I found it [lady in Ripon] so straight-forward to understand I'm puzzled why it's being asked. Or rather where you're from Thirdway to have a problem with it! :)

IMO/E her accent is not a regional one, perhaps more of a class one, and you'll find people of that class who speak in that way just about all over the country. But IME even 'upper-class' people in a place like Newcastle-U-T will always retain a tiny give-away of their local accent, esp. so if born and bred there and still located there.

I find accents/dialects etc fascinating, but you've lost me with this example.

Yup, I was really wondering why on earth the BBC thought they needed to subtitle it.

I'm wondering why it is still a Flash clip when they are supposed to be stopping doing that?
