A genius? Or more a Twit? His business acumen seems to have gone haywire. How can he claw back the money he's put into X?
Even more preposterous is his grandeose scheme to colonise Mars. Even if he had the wherewithall to attempt such a project, which he doesn't, a billion miles from being close, who the hell would want to settle on a cold, lifeless hell hole? It makes Luton look cosy.

Lost the plot?

You need to watch the excellent TV series For All Mankind - particularly series 3 and 4. Series 1 and 2 cover an alternative space race in the 60s and 70s to the colonisation of the Moon whilst the final 2 series cover a competitive race to Mars between USA/USSR expeditions and a private sector expedition (initiated by a super rich 'genius). This is followed by the colonisation of Mars and attempts to exploit the surface materials. Maybe Musk has followed the series?

I was going to say, oh, certainly there'll be some intrepid and adventurous people that would want to go ... but then on a google I found....

"One-quarter of Americans would be interested in living in a colony on Mars for the remainder of their life."

Indeed. What's more, Luton's most significant advantage is that you can get on a plane, any time you like, and fly to somewhere better. Somewhere with more sun, and with better booze, and with no Elon Musk around the place to tell his intrepid space missionaries that it's time to join the queue outside the Soylent Green pie factory. ;)
