It seems that even ones bought from the post office might not be genuine, https://www.gbnews.com/money/royal-mail-counterfeit-stamps-scandal.
This does not just apply to the new, barcoded stamps, https://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/2023/08/03/royal-mail-stamp-chaos-post-office-barcodes/.
Fakes can be very good copies and can have security features such as the UV ink bands and correct perforations. Some fakes are easier to spot than others, however, https://news.sky.com/story/royal-mail-investigates-fake-diane-abbott-stamps-11716853.
The post office now charge £5 for a letter with unpaid postage. The "fee to pay" card gives very little information about the nature of the letter or package, not even the recipient's first name or initials.

Isn't it Royal Mail who make the charge, not the Post Office?

I'm surprised they're allowed to get away with this sort of procedure. Overtones of blackmail?
Seems like a potential 'nice little earner' for the Royal Mail.
Simply print millions of unstamped postcards with random addresses and wait for the money to start rolling in.
