Steve Wright
Just seen on the BBC that the DJ Steve Wright has died at the age of 69. Obviously a bit unexpected, and no other details re what he died of. Now, if someone aged say 95 dies, then, ok, that's fairly expected so what they died of is not that relevant perhaps. But 69? Well, I'm 68 so maybe it's wishful thinking, but I'd say dying at 69 is a bit young.
All there's been so far is the usual suspects queueing up to say: a marvellous talent...exceptional broadcasting skills...sadly missed...a light has gone out of the universe...I well remember etc etc etc, which is fair enough, but surely all we want to know is what did he die of?
Why don't they either say in the first sentence
a) What he died of or
b) The family have not said what he died of
For some reason, it reminded me of a scene in an episode of Columbo:
"Tell me Sir, was the deceased in good health?"
"Very good health Lieutenant. He exercised regularly, played tennis and went for 5 mile runs at least once a week. Who'd have thought he'd drop dead from a suspected heart attack?"
"Well Sir, you never can tell. It can happen to the best of us. My wife's cousin was fit as a fiddle. Didn't smoke, didn't drink. Watched his weight, and then one day, gone just like that."
"Heart attack Lieutenant?"
"Ah... no Sir, run over by a bakery truck"

Re: Steve Wright
I, too, wondered why they didn't give a cause of death.
Then after a moment's thought I realised that, either the cause of death is not known, and/or an autopsy will be required to establish the cause.
I'm sure it will be revealed in due course.
RIP Steve.

I remember listening to him on Radio Picadilly ( Manchester). 69...not that old ( but 9 years more than my father ).

It's a sobering thought that an increasing number of announcements such as this are of people younger than me.

Where? I haven't read anything bad about him. Universal praise as a talented broadcaster and all round nice guy.

As Ella Fitzgerald sang:
So I won't. He was popular, apparently. RIP, fella, and well done for your success.

If you can't say anything that's nice, please don't talk at all, that's my advice.

Re: Steve Wright
I think he's one of the few R1 DJ's that they can still run repeats of 'Top of the Pops' with.
I think I was probablt in my late teens and an avid listener of 'Steve Wright in the afternoon'. Or was it the Breakfast Show? It doesn't matter. he was great.

It was around 1981, and my crappy old car radio couldn't get anything but Radio 1 or Radio 4, and his afternoon show was the only thing on if you didn't fancy Woman's Hour. It was, shall we say, a bit sentimental? You had to wring the tears out of the carpet after you switched off. Still, maybe he sharpened up his style later? I wouldn't know, because by 1983 I'd changed my job, and my car as well.

An astute query, but LOL, I have no idea when they schedule the programme these days. Forty three years might possibly have dulled my less important recollections a little. Perhaps I meant the Monday Play, or Listen With Mother, or the repeats of the Morning Service?
What's more, I wish it to be taken into consideration that I freely admit that I have forgotten every episode of the Archers. Unlike some of my neighbours, who can still rattle off the conversation on the day Walter Gabriel fell in a ditch, like some old Monty Python script.
It is an ex-script. It has ceased to be. It has gone to meet its maker. Which brings us, by a circuitous route, back to our starting point.

You mean you don't remember when uncle Tom was put on trial after shooting a poacher?

I thought you were referring to Steve Wright's 'Our Tune' radio spot but a quick google tells me it was actually 'Simon Bates Our Tune'. Now that was sentimental. Funny how time plays tricks with the memory.
