I think it was mainly Fairey Fireflys, and possibly helicopters as it was a commando carrier during the Suez crisis

Yes - it was launched just too late for WW2, but it carried out lots of operations in Korea - with Fireflies and Sea Furies. Then later came Suez, but like Formidable it ended up being broken up in Inverkeithing. I remember as a boy, travelling over the Forth Bridge, you could look down on the breaker's yard.
As a slight aside, I also had a chat with a second sailor (Charlie) who had served on the Arctic Convoys, and I asked him which ship he had sailed on. He told me he was on a Banana Boat - which turned out to be HMS Palomares - a Banana Boat converted for the Royal Navy into an Anti-Aircraft, and later, a Fighter Director, ship. Then after the war it returned to transporting bananas.

Full Marks! Its at Barmouth - and here it is taking the Lifeboat back to its shed:-

I was astonished how the recovery was carried out - the lifeboat drove at full speed up onto the beach, then was winched onto the trailer.

The guidance lamps were a strong clue. Well, that and the RNLI badge. ;)

Somerset's lifeboat speciality is a hovercraft that can get out onto the mudflats, and onto the quicksand bars that can land you in real trouble if you get stuck. And with even a standard spring tide rising by 50 feet (and exceptionally, by 80 feet or more), you might as well be wearing concrete boots if you get your timing wrong. I think there's also one on Morecambe Bay - but some of these hover-things are run by fire brigades and coastguards rather than by the RNLI itself.

Either way, they save maybe a dozen lives every year between them. And these are people who would undoubtedly have perished once they got into the mud. Sobering.

And while the 1st Eleven were playing with their new toy, the reserve team had a somewhat less sophisticated landing system

I should add that no seamen in distress took part in the shooting of these pictures.

I've seen one! I was squatting over a basic hole-in-ground latrine in the deep Amazon, minding my own business, when one appeared through the undergrowth and walked by right 3-4M in front of me. Holy... I feared 'the beast' might take a closer interest!
... and then there were the 'pacos', ie peccary, wild tusked pigs.

The weather has not been ideal for cycling, but with a touch of sun (and snow) today I decided to get back in the saddle. So off I went on a section of the John Muir Way, on an old railway line running parallel to the south side of the Campsies.

From the path, I took this photo (especially for Kiloran) looking towards Campsie Glen, up which he had an adventure - but today there was probably not quite a sufficient coverage of snow to repeat it.

And the adventure was:-

I think I'll stick to my bike :)

Snow on the Campsies about 40 years ago.
Not a lot of snow, so probably May/June ;)

There was a young man with a pole,
whose legs got quite lost in a hole.
The conclusion that he
really needed to ski,
led at last to the ultimate goal.

Another day of bright skies and occasional flurries of snow, so after an enjoyable lunch out we decided to walk off our excesses, and headed north to the (David Marshall) Lodge at Aberfoyle. There was no sign of red squirrels at the hide - I guess they were still snuggled up in their dreys. On our way back to the Lodge (where we indulged in more cake-based excesses) we passed a stern guardian
