After searching through lots of online information I think we are all correct on the naming - the plant is probably Aeonium arboreum var Zwartkop (or Schwarzkopf). Sometimes Atropurpureum is included in the name. There are however numerous other hybrids which have some matching features - and indeed have Zwartkop as a parent - e.g. Aeonium Jack Catlin, Aeonium Velour, Aeonium Zwartkin and Aeonium Voodoo.
I'll need to pay more attention to the succulents sections in the SRGC shows next year. :!:

Indeed. All those yellow windows, all those pristinely white streetlit spaces. And some pretty odd shadow patterns. Anybody else thinking Photoshop?

I'm afraid that thought also strayed into my mind when looking at several of these pictures. For many years we attended a wildlife photographic event in Scotland, and latterly the genuine photographers began to explain how difficult it was becoming trying to make a living out of genuine wild life photography, given that it was becoming so simple to "cheat" with digital manipulation. One presenter deliberately raised a lot of laughs when he displayed some improbably manipulated pictures
However I will admit that the National Geographic entries are impressive - however they may have been achieved.

In case anyone hasn't noticed, the above BBC article has a link at the bottom that leads to the National Geographic Travel Photo Contest pages themselves, where larger versions of the pictures featured can be seen, and also many others, both from the winning categories and also from some of the earlier rounds -

https://www.nationalgeographic.com/travel/contests/travel-photo-contest-2019/gallery/winners-all/12/

Note the left and right navigation arrows on the photo edges when using the above link, to enable moving between photos in each category, and also the header-bars (Winners / People's Choice / Week 7 / Week 6 / Week 5 etc..) above the photos to select a different section of photos if required.

Thanks for posting this Snorvey - I look forward to this competition each year, and marvel at some of the sights around the world that we still, thankfully, rarely witness.

Cheers,

Itsallaguess

OK - I'm intrigued. Clearly you are looking West or possibly WNW at this time of year. If you are on home ground, then I suppose the Lighthouse is on Tarbat Ness. On the other hand, you may be well away from your home ground - possibly over on the Firth of Lorn Looking to the entrance of the Sound of Mull. OK - I'm going to guess home ground and Tarbat Ness

Residents of the German town of Limberg woke up to a startling sight on Sunday morning: a crater in a field as large as a house. The explosion was apparently caused by a leftover bomb from World War II. Unexploded bombs are a problem in Germany and other European countries, as long-buried weapons periodically surface or spontaneously explode.

The incident took place in the central German town of Ahlbach, just north of Frankfurt. Town residents reported hearing and feeling a large explosion in the early morning hours of Sunday the 23rd, though no one appears to have actually seen it. An inspection the next day revealed a crater 33 feet wide and 14 feet deep in the middle of a barley field. Officials blamed a decomposing bomb detonator for the explosion.

I was off visiting my old (96 years) friend Andrew today, and he was describing his trip to Loch Ewe on the 11th May, to celebrate the 74th anniversary of the end of the war in Europe, and to be present at the laying of wreaths on the monument to sailors who took part in the Arctic Convoys to Russia, which started out from Loch Ewe. The Russian Government have promoted this (now annual) event, and have awarded the Ushakov medal to the RN sailors who participated. The Russian Consulate in Edinburgh maintain a library of pictures of these events, and if you are not fearful of MI5 checking you out :D you will find the pictures of this year's event at

Andrew is present, wearing his beret and medals at the front of the top left photograph.

Not meaningful without your startingpoint.

Did you start from sea level, or did you cheat on the altitude?

If he'd started from sea level it would have been a lo-o-o-o-o-ong walk in!

This thread has become a 'homage to Scotland thread'. Well done. I go two or three times a year to Loch Ewe and have been to the memorial to the Arctic Convoys several times. There is also an interesting museum up the road a bit at Aultbea. I might be able to post a photograph of the NATO refuelling pier at Aultbea if I knew how to. OTOH Snorvey's pictures are much more interesting.

And if he didn't, the height of the hill above sea level is meaningless as a measure of the walk.

If you ascend Snowdon from a startingpoint at the top of the railway thingey, your time for the walk could look more like an eagle's.

Snorvey wrote:From the car park, as I do every time.

I expect local knowledge might hint at what car park ;)

I generally try to avoid car parks in favour of less ruined places. Often that means a much longer total walk for a very modest summit. Like the walk to my favourite pub: within three miles by road, but thrice that and over two Dartmoor Tors by my preferred route.

Snorvey's photos are a treat. I am trying to figure out why the Lemonfool social will be in a London pub when everyone could follow Snorvey as he strides up some gorgeous sun-bathed peak (as far as I can tell from his photographs it never rains in these parts) before sharing stories over a delicious and generous slice of cake.
