And as you probably know, Polesden Lacey was famed for its parties organised by Margaret Greville (born Anderson) the daughter of William McEwan, who (eventually) married her mother Helen when Margaret was 21 years old. Well - he clearly didn't like to rush such matters.
And Dame Margaret Greville was the hostess with the mostest in the first half of the 20th century. Money (originating from the McEwan's Edinburgh brewery) was clearly no object and her list of guests started at the top end of Royalty.
From Wikipedia:- "She bequeathed all her jewels to Queen Elizabeth (later the Queen Mother), including a diamond necklace reputedly belonging to Marie Antoinette, a pair of diamond chandelier earrings and selection of tiaras and a ruby necklace by Boucheron, all of which are in possession of the British Royal Family. The Greville Emerald and Diamond Kokoshnik tiara was worn by Princess Eugenie at her October 2018 wedding to Jack Brooksbank."
And, some would say more importantly, she bequeathed Polesden Lacey to the National Trust.
Her father also spent some of his beer money on the McEwan hall - used for graduations at the University of Edinburgh.
So some good does seem to emanate from drinking beer - although my teetotal grandfather may have disagreed.

I'll confess I gave up after conquering one some years ago.
I found that I could catch more brown trout in Glens rather than Bens.

To be honest, it's not a particularly pretty hill. High, a Munro maybe, but that's about it. Just a big lump, fairly typical of the Cairngorm plateau and Grampian area.

And there's Brown Trout in all that water in between and round about. Now that I'm back from sunny Surrey, I'll be off to Assynt soon - hopefully to make my acquaintance with some of them.

Back in the 70's, I spent 2 weeks staying B&B at the bakery in Lochinver. Absolute bliss! Middle of June, not a cloud in the sky for 2 weeks so 19-20 hours of sunlight, fresh fish from the harbour and fresh bread from the bakery and lots of good hillwalking.... Stac Pollaidh, Quinag, Suilven, Cul Mor, Cul Beag and others. An angler was also staying at the B&B and in the 2 weeks, he caught exactly zilch! But he didn't care. He was quite happy just relaxing on the banks of the thousands of little lochans, watching the wildlife and just relaxing in the sun. He didn't seem even the tiniest bit peeved that he had caught nothing in 2 weeks.

Hope it's a bit better for you. But if not, there's always that magnificent scenery.

And I should have added - here's a photo of Suilven from the Fionn Loch - where the Brown Trout are usually obliging. Its a good walk in to the loch - up the valley of the River Kirkaig - and there's a slight deviation from the path to see the falls of Kirkaig.

This is the closest I have been to the top of Suilven!

Last summer in Lochinver the travelling cinema (The ScreenMachine) arrived for the first showing of the film. It was a full house, and a magic evening, particularly for the locals who appeared in the film. When we came out and strolled back through the village we were accompanied by some Red Deer, down from the hills and looking for any tasty plants in the gardens.

And as for the fishing - probably my best day was fishing from a boat in Loch Culag - or the School Loch as it is known, since (as shown) the Lochinver School is situated on its banks. Note the top of Suilven just peaking over the horizon

One for the climbers



This was taken from NC 0486 2841 facing SE - close to an old abandoned cottage, on my way up to Loch Poll an Droighinn, where the brown trout proved obliging. I think the peaks are (from L to R) Canisp, Suilven, Cul Mor, Cul Beag, and Stac Pollaidh. Corrections are welcome. I have never climbed to the top of any of them. I did climb up to the shoulder of Stac Pollaidh with my children, many years ago. Coming back down, we saw a young male climbing quickly up the toughest incline. Trailing behind was a female companion, and she said to us "And he thinks this is fun!" I fear that partnership was not bound to last.
