Was contemplating a hike up Ben Rinnes (the white one on the right) this weekend....maybe not.

The River Braan beside the Hermitage, near Dunkeld today

Image

It was a pleasant dawdle up through the trees beside the Braan to the Hermitage this afternoon.
But the other part of the plan didn't work out so smoothly. In the (Glasgow) Herald today there was an article on a bakery in Dunkeld, run by a former contestant in the Great British Bake Off - so we felt a visit was required. Much to our surprise it was closed - apparently it only stays open until all of their fresh bakery items have sold out, and this usually occurs in early afternoon at the weekends. Looking at the web I see that it has been known for a queue to form before it opens. Clearly I'll need to get on the road to Dunkeld a bit sooner in the morning.

There are days where you have other things planned but where the weather conditions mean you just have to drop those plans and just......get out there.

Ooooer. Noooo!

Assuming the human subject is ‘wifey’you must convince her n’er to place those firm tender rounded cheeks on snow covered freezing rocks else you’ll be putting thru’ a call to Dr. Pile to administer soothing ointment to those nasty hemorrhoids .

Nice photo by the way.

The photo is of me.

And she's on her way round to kick your ass.

[titter] So it was you. [/titter]

To save a wasted journey tell her to leave it until after New Year when I’ll be back there. Oh, and can she also wear slippers instead of boots as my ‘farmers’ are giving me a little gip of late.

The guy in the yellow jacket who I caught up with and walked/chatted with for a while was 74 years old and somewhat of a 'Munro' celebrity, having completed all the peaks just 3 years ago. He uses Ben Rinnes as a bit of a sharpener when he can't get to anything bigger.

For being almost quarter of a century older than me, he was only about 5 or 10 minutes behind us at the top. A remarkable chap.

And I hope in quarter of a century's time you'll still be strolling up Ben Rinnes, and wondering why anyone should think it unusual at 75 years old. :)

But in quarter of a century the other chap will be heading towards genuinely remarkable for doing it.

If she lived next door to me playing her bloody rock music at that volume at the time I'd be knocking on her door constantly.

......And hoping she answers.

Meant to post this a while ago

- it cropped up on my google "remember this day" thing and I've only got round to it (hopefully it works)
- hopefully it counts as appropriate to this thread

This was door no 1 in our Aldi advent calendar a couple of years ago

Whilst out foraging for coffee this morning, the river looked very welcoming for a swim....aye. Right

Spotted a kingfisher on a local river during the week. It didn't hang around long enough for me to take a decent picture, but nice to see all the same.

Well this is my personal favourite photo of 2019.

I really don't think I've actually got over what happened on that night at Anfield on the 8th of May, and seeing this photo brings it all rushing back - a proper 'hair on the back of your neck' moment, and a great reminder to me personally about how powerful photographs can be in our lives...

There's been some great photos posted here over the year, and I hope to have more input myself in 2020.

I'd like to wish all of the 'pic of the day' posters and readers a Merry Christmas, and very best wishes for the coming New Year.

Cheers,

Itsallaguess

Christmas Day. A 6 mile walk through Abernethy Forest to the secluded Loch Mallachie and onto Loch Garten (home of the ospreys although they weren't in) - just the perfect appetite sharpener before the indulgences....

A very peaceful and still (and slightly frozen) Loch Mallachie

Meall a' Bhuachaille II - the opposite direction

Boxing Day was calm at sea level....

......but rather less so at 850 meters, where it was...errrr.....'bracing'. We decided to take our Costa coffee and shortbread down the hill for consumption.

Image

The weather improved dramatically on the descent

Image

Superheated Costa Coffee, Walkers shortbread and a toasty warm bothy made up for it all.

One for Kiloran, who I recall visited in 1974.

OK, Snorvey, you're obviously getting some nice walkies there (congrats).

What daylight do you currently have for them? I'd suspect it to be tending to rather less than adequate for doing that much!

Well according to the wifey's fitness tracker, the Boxing Day climb was 3 and a half hours, start to finish. I was back in the bar by 3pm, easy.

The Christmas Day thing took a bit longer, mainly because of the amount of folk around Loch Garten (Merry Christmas and all that.), but I know we were back in the hotel, showered and ready for dinner at 3pm. It start to get dark around 3.30pm at this time of year, but there's plenty of daylight for a ramble if you get moving early enough.
