I believe the favourite trick by the Bear was to drop down to sea level where the Lightning gobbled through fuel at an enormous rate - and had to turn for home. The counter was to have a tanker accompany the Lightning, but I haven't seen any RAF photos with the accompanying tanker. Its only the dashing fighter boys that got into the pictures.
Maybe today we have dashing fighter guys and gals in the Typhoons?

I suppose they need the QRA launch practice, but it's a costly exercise, no doubt about it. I qonder why these days they can't just lock a ground based missile on to the Russkis and issue, say, 3 warnings?

Alternatively - why don't the RAF pilots issue an invitation to the Russkis to drop into Lossie, and have a few drinks in the Officer's mess?
I know that may seem a bit daft, but back in the pre-Putin days, it could have been possible. I remember at the 1991 Leuchars airshow the Russian Knights in their SU27s were a star attraction. (And I remember the multi-hour traffic jam when the airshow ended. :x )

Russian fighter jets look really mean in an unrefined kind of way.

They were mighty impressive aircraft! And clearly didn't feel the need for camouflage.

I've seen a couple of MiG 29 Fulcrums fairly close up - although the pilots bent them slightly and they were shipped home in bits (the aircraft, not the pilots)
Same airshow had a Tu-95 Bear on static display. The crew were sat on the grass next to it, and had set up a wee stall selling Soviet air force memorabilia (cap badges etc) I should have bought something - be quite cool to say, 'oh yes bought this from a Russian nuclear bomber pilot a while back...'

That brings back memories. I think the crew of the IL76 support aircraft had a stall selling memorabilia!
Its a great shame that Putin has dragged Russia back to Cold War days.

It's now May!

It's six weeks since I was last on a train; which is the longest I've not been near one in 23 years.

Yes - I think it was the entire outfit, checking out the Free Enterprise system :)

It looks like Monbulk Creek perhaps - the Puffing Billy railway?

It is indeed!

We'd booked it months in advance when we realised the last Sunday of my parent's visit coincided with (UK) Mother's Day; and she'd seen Michael Portillo on it.

Turns out it was the final run before closing due to one thing or another, and the six if us had the carriage to ourselves.
(wasn't the last Sunday of the visit either but that's another thing altogether..)

Strange and quite memorable

Stay well

Can we assume that he was tied to the tracks?

It looks great by the way..

I actually think it's Jockrails latest effort on the Inverness to Aberdeen line.

Well, it beats the main and only railway connecting us west and south of Exeter[1] to the rest of the country!

[1] Including Plymouth and the whole of Cornwall.

Strewth! What kind of a churchyard is that? Remarkably flat and even, not to mention mown to within an inch of it's life! Surely no church dating back further than 1945 should be so devoid of gothic character!

Hoar frost on the trees, a light dusting of snow and a cooling breeze from the north - what is there not to like about that?

Indeed - but its the degree of improvement that makes it seem quite acceptable when compared to a January day down at the harbour in Wick with sub zero temperatures and a gale force Nor'easter coming in from the sea. My wife claims that as a result she was wind-pruned to under 5 ft tall (or short). :)

I remember being in Aberdeen at Whitsuntide in 1960, when it snowed. We had a very bracing walk along the beach at Cruden Bay, when we were the only people on the beach. High Tea at the Hotel made up for it.
