Dunkirk (review)

#69282

Postby Beerpig » July 24th, 2017, 3:43 pm

We went to see the film 'Dunkirk yesterday.
It was a very good film although I didn't think it was as quite good as some of the critics have made out.
It starts off 1-0 down because its not as if the viewer is alien to the story. However the beauty of the film is how it presents the story with a minimum of narrative and a maximum of special effects and the use of authentic props and extras.
Kenneth (sorry SIR Kenneth) Branagh is in there in his naval Commander's uniform, 15 years too old for the part doing a lot of narrowing of eyes to the horizon and sky and not a lot else. However its the youngsters who steal the show, their acting is really first class and reminds us that the majority of the soldiers who fought in the war were kids themselves.
For me the outstanding 'performance was by Mark Rylance as the civilian captain of one of the 'little ships'.
Very plausible and very moving.
It wouldn't surprise me if it brought him an Oscar nomination for best supporting actor.

Good film.
Really enjoyed it.

Thanks for the write-up, hoping to see the film soon but, to be consistent, do you mean Sir David Mark Rylance Waters?

No.
I mean Mark Rylance the actor.
This is his stage or acting name.
I wouldn't refer to Sir Cliff Richard as Harry Webb.
Or Matt Monroe as Terrence Edmund Parsons.

Actually thanks for that.
I didn't realise he was a knight PD ;)
I'd still refer to him by his stage name.

Yes I enjoyed it too.

The special effects are superb, as are the way the incidents are filmed from various perspectives. It is certainly 'different' from the various war films before as it doesn't focus on the whole operation as other films have previously before.

7/10 from me.

I'm looking forward to seeing it as all aspects of the war featured heavily in my childhood. My cousin in America emailed me a copy of film critic's Brian Truitts comments on the film in which he deplores the lack of women and actors of color. Fortunately not all Americans are as daft and apparently he received a roasting on twitter.

Bearing in mind that link was to an article written 6 years ago it seems pretty unlikely the film will ever be made at all.

Let's hope so! But sometimes films can take many years before they finally get into production.

Apparently Hacksaw ridge (which I found a superb film), was over ten years before it finally went into production.

A great set of pictures in the Mail today taken by Germans after the evacuation (the Mail always seems to do this type of stuff really well) - http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-4731202/Allied-POWs-captured-evacuation-Dunkirk.html
