Selfie Deaths
In the past few days I've read stories of a Korean lady and a British man plunging to their deaths apparently taking selfies from tall objects (Seven Sisters cliffs and an Indian temple respectively). It seems to be a growing phenomenon.
About 15 years ago these two would have been candidates for the Darwin Awards which used to do the rounds on office emails. Has Homo Sapiens now reached the point where he (or she) is starting to use the tools he has created to select himself out of the gene pool? Mad Donald may yet still decide to accelerate that process too...

The intelligence and logic of these people never ceases to amaze me to the point where I have to ask myself whether they were actually ever part of the gene pool? Whereas myself, I will never be subject to this idiotic selfie narcissism, as primarily I would first need to purchase a cell phone and that certainly ain't going to happen any time soon.

Re: Selfie Deaths
Aaah, the Darwin Awards. The Polish guy who chopped his own leg off for a dare, because it seemed like a good idea at the time, and because the vodka was good and the chainsaw was handy. And the US guy who attached military rocket boosters to his car and buried himself and his car into the middle of a cliff face two miles away.
Selfies? Pah! Y'know, these millennials today just don't have the ambition to do anything properly.

Re: Selfie Deaths
There seems to be a growing addiction by some with a brinkmanship.
Besides those who flirt with crumbly cliff edges ,there are Brits on holiday falling from balconies at almost one a week during the summer.
With the promise of gale force winds and mountainous seas predicted, I expect wave-watchers will be out in numbers , putting themselves in danger as well as the emergency services , such as the policemen who were drowned effecting a rescue some years ago in Blackpool.

The really annoying thing re the Seven Sisters one was that, as she had given her camera to a bystander to take a photo while she jumped in the air on the cliff edge, presumably he did get to take the shot; what we have not been told is, how did it come out? Maybe it did but he's just taken it home to frame it?

Re: Selfie Deaths
Some years ago I saw a cartoon with two climbers on a vertical rock face, with a camera-toting tourist in free fall behind them. Said one climber to the other "I hope he is using a fast shutter speed"

Ah, yes, and then there's the poor young window-cleaner who falls fifty floors after a safety harness slips. As he passes the fourth floor on the way down to his appointment with the pavement, his mates working on the lower storey windows hear him muttering: "Okay, so far, so good...."

Re: Selfie Deaths
I once saw a clip (part of a longer film) made by some Irish hunting men who were visiting the East Midlands.
The rider who was filming took a flying leap in the wrong place and descended some 30 ft into a river.
And perhaps being full of Guinness, Jamesons and Scotch from the night before and with adequate further lubrication at the Meet, he carried on his filmed commentary as he was descending: not all of it suitable for delicate or religious ears. He even carried on after he hit the water.
He and the horse apparently survived more or less unscathed.

You remind me of a visit I made to Beachy Head with a Youth Group around 60 years ago ! The other 8 or 9 lads rushed over to the edge, laid down on their stomachs and looked over the edge.... I remained back thinking how stupid they were and how irresponsible the group leader was being. This was despite spending many hours climbing local trees from about the age of 7 but with that you were in control ! There's no accounting for utter stupidity.

Re: Selfie Deaths
Many years ago, the wife and I were walking along a heavily wooded ridge in southern France when we came to a headland which afforded a magnificent view over a river gorge, far down below us. It was a massive nose of rock which jutted out by six or eight feet, giving us a 270 degree panorama. The perfect picnic spot, in fact. So we took it at its word and spent a glorious hour - or maybe two - on such innocent pursuits, and maybe a few more besides. Then we packed up our stuff and walked on.
Thirty metres along the path, we looked back and saw that our rock hadn't been a headland at all. It was a loose boulder which had lodged perilously on its way down the hillside, and there was nothing underneath it but fresh air - all the way down to the valley bottom, three hundred metres below.
Who says what you don't know can't hurt you?

Re: Selfie Deaths
There's a video taken by an American Tourist in Fukushima as the Tsunami wave flooded in. Along with all the "OMG"s the camera wielder comments that the water has just devoured a multi-storey building adjacent to the one he is filming from. In the background throughout the video is his friend, suggesting that they really ought to go....
There's a report of a hotel in Europe which has , as Para one of its fire rules the statement "In case of Fire, move immediately to a place of safety before trying to download your video to the internet!"

Will a leftover bottle of hand sanitiser disinfect me after visiting that web site?

Wouldn't have thought you'd need your hands sanitized after reading the Daily Mail site? Some other posters perhaps
