Re: SPOTY
Yes, if Murray hadn't had a such a fantastic end to the season Brownlee was the shoe in.
Only reason I think Murray is so long is partly not on public radar yet - should be if he wins today.
And also winning last year does put some risk into it.
PS. Love the new forum - much cleaner than the fool.

Surely he can't win again can he? He won in 2013 and 2015! For the love of God give it to someone else.

Not this year.
To get to #1 in Tennis is no mean feat particularly when likes of Djokovic are around.
I never thought he'd win a grand slam but he proved me wrong and has gone from strength to strength.
For me, easily the UK's best ever sportsman - three times is about right.

now there's fighting talk
certainly up there... but as a counter Wiggins has multiple world stage victories and world records broken across multiple cycling disciplines, track and road etc.
Mike Hazelwood - british water skier in the 70s and 80s... world champion multiple times, eight consecutive world chaps, world records holder
Daley Thompson - not only having to be "excellent" at ten dispclines, but was undefeated globally for nine years.
And that's just the men !
but its a fun debate

Sure is and I'd absolutely put Daley Thompson up there with the best.

Re: SPOTY
How odd that Murray, the guy with the least obvious "personality" is favourite. But surely he has to be?except for this very British thing about "he's won it before, so let's give it to someone else. It's not FAIR".
But I'd say he would deserve it. Come on guys, whenever did we have a year like this No1, Gold Wimbledon - NEVER!
In previous years, it was almost as though we gave it to Murray incase he never got any better, never repeated his success but now he is without doubt a genuine No1, top of his tree, successful in a sport we have always cherished, obsessed about and wanted to finding a winner in for over 70 years.
Now he's done it, it would be churlish to deny him the accolade he deserves - whether or not he's won it previously is an irrelevancy, in my view.
Oh, and the last time I looked, the BBC broadcast all over the UK and the SPOTY is a British award.

Re: SPOTY
It's a beak of a lot harder being number 1 tennis player in the world than number 1 F1 World Champion.
I reckon you ccould put our cat in the Mercedes cockpit and he would be a shoe in.
Murray. In a year of outstanding Olympians yet again head and shoulders over the rest.

If you rank Global sports then tennis is near the top;
http://www.biggestglobalsports.com/
At the top for individual sports.
That means it's a hell of a lot harder to get to No.1 than in most other sports and for my money that makes Murray strong candidate for our best ever sportsperson.

Re: SPOTY
The dour miserable Scot has been World number one for a whole week - No way does that make him Britain's best ever sportsman !
Even in tennis he's not Britain's best ever - Fred Perry won three Wimbledons in a row and a career grand slam (Murray hasn't, yet). Fred won the world table tennis championship too.
Can you tell I'm not a Murray fan ?
Anyone but Murray to win SPOTY, but I've already laid off all my bets for a small profit.

Re: SPOTY
I think today could be make it or break it. Is he going to end the year as No 1 with a famous victory, or lose it and show he still can't beat his nemesis?
Good luck Andy!
Scott.

A bit like finding money in the street for me.
That's what I thought when I bet on Hilary Clinton

Oh dear!
Not sure the two are comparable though.

Re: SPOTY
The shortlist is out - http://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/sports-personality/38128821
Gareth Bale - Football
Alistair Brownlee - Triathlon
Mo Farah - Athletics
Laura Kenny - Cycling
Andy Murray - Tennis
Nick Skelton - Equestrian
The above six are who I think are going to be the main contenders, however I'm struggling to see past Andy Murray as the vote for Laura Kenny(nee Trott) will be diluted by there being 2 other cyclists on the list. Maybe Mo Farah being the only person from athletics will give him a boost although I'm not sure it is enough to overcome the tennis vote.
