Passive pensions

The Local Government Pension Scheme is "under political pressure" to dump all active fund managers.

£275bn of assets, and the note I read said government officials "pressed it to switch", all because of Woodford.

Are passive investments the way forward now?

Because of the taxpayer guarantee , government sponsored schemes are in principle better able to accept greater risks in exchange for potentially higher returns. But perhaps taxpayers would prefer the certainty of higher taxes against rolling the dice against the market with the possibility of even higher taxation if a bail out is needed. There again perhaps the investment risk could be passed to individuals as is increasingly the case in the private sector.
