Hi folks,

Have any of you, got any views on Croda? Do they comprise an economic moat?

They certainly seem to have a diverse range of products:

Adhesives
Agrochemicals
Automotive & Transport
Beauty & Personal Care
Buildings & Construction
Dietary Supplements
Electronics & Devices

Energy, Resources & Renewables
Food Ingredients
Furniture & Wood
Household, Industrial & Institutional Cleaning
Lubricants
Oleochemicals
Packaging, Print & Paper

Paints & Coatings
Pharmaceuticals
Phase Change Materials & Thermal Management
Polymers & Additives
Skin Health
Textiles, Nonwovens & Tissues
Water Treatment

So what do you all think?

thanks Matt

I don't know about a moat, but they look very highly rated to me. I think personally i'd wait to see if they can be bought any more cheaply.

Yeah, me too. I'm in the research stage now - they do look like an interesting firm. I'm just in the process of trying to pick up articles about them online.

In terms of "moats", I'm wondering how people think they compare to the likes of Unilever (ULVR) and Diageo (DGE).

FWIW I took a look at their share price history over the year. Apart from a massive drop in the first part of Oct. (which they seem to be recovering from) they seemed to have a fairly stable gradually rising market value (surely this is an empirical measure of "moatness") - arguably more so than the likes of ULVR and DGE.

One of my biggest mistakes was croda.

In my early days I did a sterling job of buying croda, then I sold it for 748p (2009) and a 22% profit. Just because I thought that was what you were meant to do.

It would now be a 7 bagger in 10 years if I'd held.

Genius.

If those sells make the price drop, and Croda is still a good investment, then I'm not too worried by them.

I'm not rushing out to buy it, and I'm still doing more research. But it's price history over the year illustrates that it held it's ground, excepting the fall in early Oct. when, let's face it, almost the entirety of the footsie suffered.

Matt
