Wetherspoons (JDW)

Nearly everyone will be familiar with Wetherspoons even if opinions vary from avoid them like the plague to look for the nearest when in an unfamiliar town.

Performance for total return investors has been well worth having.

According to tools.morningstar, one year 17.97 v FTSE 100 3.73
three years 22.98 v 8.75
five years 16.92 v 6.60
ten years 13.96 v 9.17

The curious feature is that the dividend payment has been constant at 12.0 p per share since 2011. So it's paying something, but if desperate for income, a holder would have to be top slicing.

The dividend yield is under 1%, so it's what you might get on cash if you are lucky or research the best deals.

They always seems to be busy - even if I wander past at 2pm in the afternoon, our local 'spoons always have the tables outside packed with East Europeans and the general unemployables smoking away. The insides seem busy enough too. So as a business, he's doing plenty right.

I doubt it'll stop anytime soon either, but if all the east europeans go home post-Brexit, profits might get hit. That's the only real concern I'd have over the share price TBH.

Healthy ROE but looks reasonably priced to me. I wouldn't be taking a new position at these levels. More interesting value elsewhere methinks.

I've held this for a decade or so and it has been rewarding. I'm excited about the expansion in Ireland. They only have 6 properties there right now, so there is a lot of scope to put a pub in every town, like they are here. They have a hotel in Swords which is handy for Dublin airport and there will be a large hotel in Dublin itself soon:
