East Fife 4, Forfar 5...

Postby Itsallaguess » August 8th, 2022, 6:56 pm

A sporting tradition going back decades is no more - BBC Radio 5 Live will stop broadcasting the classified football results at 5pm on Saturdays.

"With the addition of the 5.30pm live Premier League match to our coverage, Sports Report has been condensed into a shorter programme," the BBC said.

The BBC said it would still offer goal updates throughout the day on air.

James Alexander Gordon read the results for more than 40 years before Charlotte Green took over the reins in 2013.

So here we go then, just for old times sake, with James Alexander Gordon - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fdgZ9GCSjsI

Of course you watch the wrestling; Big Daddy, Giant Haystacks, Kendo Nagasaki, and (boo hiss) Mick McMannus.

And then it was time for tea.

The majority are. For instance 5 of the 7 matches in the Premiership next Saturday have a 3pm kick off. There is a strict set of broadcasting rules to ensure most matches take place simultaneously.

It's 5 out of 10 (you need to include all the clubs in the league)
the following week it's 4 out of 10
so it's not a majority

It's the majority of games on a Saturday which I thought was what was being asked. But I can see how the question can be answered differently. Alternatively you could say its even higher as the question referred to leagues (plural). 4 out of 4 games in the Scottish Premiership next Saturday (or 4 out of 6 at the weekend), and 8 out of 9 (or 8 out of 11 at the weekend) in the Championship.

Regardless, clearly the answer is more than "none", which appears to have been your original thinking.

Fair point I shouldn't have said "no" it's more a case of a lot fewer
there are some long periods of time when certain teams who feature heavily on TV (Liverpool for example) don't play a 3pm Saturday for weeks on end
TV money has definitely changed the schedule
btw I am not against that, I quite like having games to watch on Sat Sun and Mon

Examples like that are as much to do with being in the European competitions so clubs don't play Monday, then Wednesday, or Thursday then Saturday too often.

TV money has of course changed the schedule, how else can games be seen by a wide enough audience (which brings significant revenue to the game) if they have to be shown at the same time? More significantly, all the other clubs have a vested interest (as do the leagues) in televised games not being broadcast at the "normal" Saturday 3pm time. This significantly reduces attendances.

TV broadcast deals are voted on by all clubs in the league and that Saturday 3pm slot is hugely important. Even limited overseas broadcasts in that slot are contentious in commercial discussions.

Didn’t the original question refer to the “big leagues”?
