At least the writer acknowledged that the opposition was very poor. Incidentally, I have nothing against Iran taking against their own country by refusing to sing their National Anthem but I do not think it helpful for other teams to take against the host country. Everyone knew about the stance taken by the Government of Qatar at the time when Qatar were awarded the venue.

Indeed.... and quite a lot of people have been rightly aggrieved by that since!

I wasn't around for the '36 Olympics but I imagine I might have felt that criticism of the hosts was justified, despite javelins being chucked, etc

That said I think that the attempt to "sports-wash" their way in to acceptable society by the Qatar government has backfired a bit.

Rugby coaching #101

A fine example here of a smother tackle - tracks the attacker, gets in close, head on the correct side, no danger of head to head contact, brings the man down and rolls away after the tackle. Excellent. Watch the tackle on England #6

PS but what IS the penalisable offense?

I've alluded to Sports Washing earlier in the thread. I genuinely feel England should not be at the Qatari World Cup. A close relative spent 20 years working in Saudi Arabia, teaching them how to run their military. In particular his area was logistics. We spoke recently and he reminded me of a flight he had been on out of Qatar. As the aircraft took off most of the Qataris on the aircraft removed their national dress and ordered alcoholic drinks.

Why does Qatari need to host the World Cup I ask myself. Could that money not be spent on something more beneficial? In my opinion it could. The UK, Germany, the US, France, indeed many countries do not need to build new stadiums to host the World Cup. What will Qatari do with all the infrastructure it has built to host a few games of football? The population is only 2.9 million of which 900k are Qataris'. The remainder are immigrants brought to the country to work. The word slavery has been used in many internet articles to describe how immigrant workers are treated in Qatari. Some improvement has been made in recent years.

Qataris like many Arabs do not work. It is below them. This isn't a World Cup that's about football. It's Sports Washing at its azimuth. The footballers and coaches are being used as pawns in a larger game. I think in those circumstances they have every right to raise their voices.

FIFA are making a mockery of the World Cup.

I'll shut up now and get back to watching England.

So far, in 5 games there have been 78 minutes of "extra" time
that is practically a whole match :D

How solid were the disallowed goals?

Saudis were 100-1 at 1-0 down, and given the three disallowed goals I was tempted.

All clear-cut none of the usual 4-5 minute delays, didn' t even need VAR for one of them

Not needing 4-5 mins just means it wasn't the English contingent on duty as the euros proved...

Give the WC a chance there have only been a handful of games
They have SEVEN VAR cameras so plenty of room for debate

I'm pro-VAR, I'm just anti manning it with idiots.
