If anyone fancies having a go at volleyball tomorrow evening and is within stabbing distance of Tonbridge, Kent then just let me know as I'm "hosting" an event there and everyone is welcome, that is, total newcomers to national players(!).
Free.

Re: Volleyball
HI Chris,
I am putting two and two together and am hoping that the result is the biggest, fattest FOUR imaginable.
Happy for you.

Re: Volleyball
Thank you. Six peeps have claimed they are going to my VB event so far. I do this pretty much every week and we usually end up with about 12.didds wrote:HI Chris,

Last sunday I did one at Camber Sands. We squeezed the court into a packed beach and end up with about 30 players, about a third of which we recruited from the people on the beach. In fact we had a Czech versus UK friendly at one stage. The whole thing was interspersed with dips in the sea and the odd beer. Bliss.

Re: Volleyball
Is the pub at Camber still the Royal William? I have memories of one summer afternoon when I had about a seated load on a double decker, the heavens opened and about 30 Girl Guides came haring over the dunes. The driver and I had a brief consultation and we ended up with 84 and two dogs on a 53-seater. A very steady trip back to Rye and we shed a few coming into town, so the big crowd on the rear platform had gone.
Happy days of the 1950s.

Nice story Terry. I don't know, we spent the whole time on the beach. The beer just appeared from various players' bags. C.tjh290633 wrote:Is the pub at Camber still the Royal William?

Re: Volleyball
I've just had a look, Chris. There is a Dunes Bar and Restaurant in about the original place. Looks like the original pub has been knocked down. The totty used to go there on a Saturday night, when soldiers from Lydd were there as well. I didn't often get a Saturday night off, unless I was on early turns. Even then you could be doing reliefs until mid evening, and the pubs closed at 10pm. One August Bank Holiday I clocked on at 8am, got sent to Margate at 09:30, sent back at 18:00 and arrived in Rye after the service bus, still with some Hastings passengers on board. Left Hastings about 22:30, after the last service bus to Rye and clocked off at 23:30. Double time plus a days holiday pay in lieu. I don't think that I had enough change to pay in what I was supposed to, so just gave them the notes, which was more than the fares I had collected. Fortunately the next morning, most of the passengers on the first run had the right money. They were well trained, the regulars.

Re: Volleyball
So by way of a de-brief, we had 12 attendees. Three accomplished players, six useful players, and three newcomers (including one boy of nine). We played from 1900 until 2115 and, I think, all had an enjoyable time. We had a few pitch-invasions from a variety of dogs but nothing much stopped us. No injuries. Music booming out from my "Street Machine" boom box (only catchy numbers randomly selected from the last 58 years).
There was a bit of a panic before I set off as I tested my (home made) scoreboard and it gave forth the most enormous cloud of white smoke on my living room table! The two power pins on the printed circuit board had become yanked together thereby making a short circuit of the motorbike battery that powers it. Hundreds of Amps flowed through these tiny wires (oh why hadn't I built a fuse into it?) melting the insulation and making an even shorter short circuit.
Had about half an hour to find my soldering iron, solder, crimp lugs, crimper, cutters, and wire, to replace the burnt mess. Just managed it in time!
