At least they’ve managed to double their goals for and are only bottom on goal difference. ;)

Crowd funding anyone?

I'm sure there are many worse places to watch a football match (or go for a long walk outside the short home season), even if the they don't win manage to pick up many points:

With something like twice the rainfall of Glasgow, I suspect you wouldn't see much of the scenery.
Maybe the team would do better if they picked up their shinty sticks.

The next few days appear to be fine, with rain forecast at least for nine of them, out of nine, depending on where one checks. Perfect weather for a bracing walk. What else would one want (other than appropriate clothing etc)?

Next fixture Wednesday 29 Aug 2018 v Strathspey Thistle FC on nil points, as against FWFC's minus 9 (Fielding inelgible player on three occasions as Snorvey said earlier and I missed when looking at the BBC's table rather than here http://www.highlandfootballleague.com/LeagueTable/).

Snorvey wrote:Yup, Strathy up next for FW. Strathspey Thistle (from Grantown on Spey) used to be neck and neck with FW for the weakest team in the league by far. They're still weak, but I've heard they've had a bit of money thrown at them so are a little stronger now. ...

I go away for a few days and come back hoping to see the latest news. Seems like there's been nothing to report.

Wednesday 29 Aug 2018

Fort William FC 1 v 1 Strathspey Thistle FC
:D (<<< That's a D for Draw)

Up to -8 points but, unfortunately, Saturday 1 September takes them to second place Cove Rangers. Not that I feel FWFC's goal difference is of much importance. It is the points they need to pick up over the remaining 27 matches.

I make it:

Played 17 Lost 15.

And to rub salt into the wounds, a few weeks ago they were leading Wick Academy by one goal to nil when the referee abandoned the game due to a waterlogged pitch.
Never mind, given some recent Scotland performances, maybe there's hope for some of the Fort William players.

Snorvey wrote:Last weeks 12-1 drubbing followed by yesterday's 11-0 humping saw Fort's goals against easily pass through minus 200 for the season (so far!). Goal difference is still...errr.... 'positive' at minus 193 though, but the last few games of the season should put paid to that.

Fort Bill's points remain at minus 7 for the year.

The 11-0 defeat by Keith included five goals scored by Keith's record goal scorer....Keith.

I can see the future fixtures here http://www.highlandfootballleague.com/Fixtures/ but not the detailed season's results in date order.

When did they last score and do they have any hoping in getting to the magic 20 for?

They average a goal a game at home so, on that basis alone, there's every chance. ;)

Fort William 2 - 6 Nairn County

From the BBC website:
Kick off suspended until 3.30 pm due to the ref being delayed with the pitch currently waterlogged and covered in deer faeces.

Fort William 1 - 6 Forres Mechanics

You have to admire their consistency. After 33 games:
Won: 0
Drew: 2
Lost: 31
For: 20
Against: 240
Pts: -7

One more game to play

They still managed to score 21 goals in the season (which was 5% over my target).

Interesting article in today's Guardian covering the Fort William story -

Fort William haven’t won a Highland League game for more than two years. Last season they picked up two points from 34 matches, scoring 21 goals and conceding 245. A nine-point penalty for fielding an ineligible player meant they ended on -7 points. But the numbers only tell half the story.

The club began the season with a handful of first-team players and fielded teams of teenagers in order to keep football alive in this remote corner of Scotland. The scorelines were monstrous – they lost 10 games by 10 goals or more – but fuelled a media interest that gave the club a platform to tell their story, attract a whole new fan base, and rediscover their soul...

I do hope they're not asked to report for training too soon after they get their next elusive win - it sounds like it's going to be some party that night!!

Cheers,

Three goals scored on Saturday. Only GD saves them from not being bottom!
