Hattrick Season 70

#179706

Postby Donut102 » November 12th, 2018, 1:48 pm

A new season is upon us, and chance to reflect on last season:

Team

Still in Training mode. Average age of my first XI is still 22, so a few more seasons yet. Last season I said I would switch to Def training from PM after the Cup run. I didn't actually make the change, though the need for some Def training is building.
I bought a Titanic keeper to displace my level 12 goalie, as planned.

League

Still in V, which is fine whilst training. I won the league last season, not because I played particularly well but rivals took points off each other.
I'm still not good enough to promote, and feel I will lose my top spot this season.

Cup

Progressed from R4 to R5 last season. Target R6 this season.

HatStats

Record of 348 last season. Hope to achieve 360.
Hmm...fell short at just 313. Could do better.

Coach

Excellent coach, weakleadership. Plan to replace when he drops to poor, and already have a Solid leadership ready to take the role. This should be start of season 71.

Cash

Spent £6m of my £10m on the new keeper. The balance I'm keeping to pay to covert an Excellent coach at the end of the season.
Annual income has fallen from £1.3m to £1m due to wage inflation with the new keeper.
If I can progress to R6 of the cup I can make up that drop easily.

Executive summary: Not quite good enough.

Team

As ever, training training training. All my IMs are homegrown, and this season we started with set pieces training, before moving on to passing. Have now switched back to PM training.

League

I had my fair share of luck last season, starting off with a jammy win set the tone, and I smashed through the first half of the season with six wins and a draw. Second half of the season not so hot, with three wins, three draws, and a one defeat. Still not too shabby, and was in first for most of the season, and had the bonus qualifying game. I'd have taken that many many other seasons.

Starting off with a home game is good, but it's against the only team I didn't beat last season.

I did look at swapping leagues last week, and found a few with fellow Fools or ex-fools in them I could have joined, then decided I'd think on it, and of course, it's only a short window, so I'm staying where I am.

Cup

Got to R4 last season. Will continue with messing up training plans in return for trying to stay in the cup for as long as possible on PICs, that team spirit boost can't be beat.

HatStats

Hatstats? Not thought about them for a while. Hmm, that's 3 x midfield + def + att isn't it? In which case 226 was my max this season. Not very close to my best.

Coach

Excellent coach with weak leadership. Need to buy in a replacement soon then.

Cash

Sitting on £3m. Spent a million more than than I earnt last season. Basically because I sold a few old fellas for not that much, and their replacements cost a fair wedge. No planned spending sprees.

And then Hattrick email me a season summary, which contained these interesting nuggets...

Fan Club
Sadly, our fan club lost 5 fans this season. Our fan club development ranked 1 out of 8 teams in our series.

So all the other teams lost more than 5 fans? Seems a bit rum that even the league winner did nowt more than hold their fanbase steady.

Your best lineup this season in terms of stars achieved was a 3-5-2 formation against Manchester Maestro's. This lineup reached 89 stars and ranked as number 3 in your series this season.

All the managerial skills right there! :)

Finances
Your net revenue was -944 547 £ and your income from youth players was 1 400 £. This placed you as number 6 and number 6 on the series rank, respectively.

My youth team is a bit shocking really. Got all my trainees out of it though, so mustn't grumble.

The Club's gross revenue for player sales was 541 702 £. Meanwhile the Club paid 3 833 333 £ for incoming talent. This means our capital has decreased with 3 291 632 £ due to transfers this season. I hope you know what you are doing, boss!

Mate, I'm in IV, I've never got above III, never stayed in III for more than a season, it's season 70 and I started in season 20. Safe to say, I don't really really know what I'm doing.

I can only dream of the heady heights of series III, despite joining in season 23!
Series IV is my best effort to date and its where I am now, having won my qualifier to stay in this series.

Team
20 players, I have been training scoring for what seems like forever, therefore we have a young forward line, a very aged midfield, with a mixed age defence. Recently sold a couple of new trainees to bring in some cash so that I can at lease get one midfielder 26 years old or even younger.

League
Surprised ourselves by not being relegated, and even winning the unexpected qualifier. Won two league games I didnt expect, didn't win the two games I thought we would win, and drew three games that I thought would be defeats. I clearly know diddly squat about this game.

This season looks no easier, the new kids in the league are as strong if not stronger than those recently departed.

Cup
out in round 3 last season. We do not have high expectations this season either...

Coach
has world class experience but weak leadership. Have a couple of replacements on our books, for when the time comes.

Cash
Pleased to say we are sitting on £3m, but as I need a midfielder, that £3m disappears quickly.

We kick off away, against the team that beat us last season 5-4 and 5-1. Better focus at that defence!

I see you've been busy.

Both my teams are continuing 5% training under an excellent coach, scoring in England for half the season, and playmaking for the second half. Expecting to auto-relegate, and maybe get to R3 of the Cup

My second team's full-backs/PNFs training plan for playmaking is very nearly complete, and they'll get a short burst of passing training in Oceania before 3 seasons of wing and 3 seasons of defending. 3rd round of the Cup would be a good target, and finishing 5th again.

I'm standing for re-election as the England NT manager, and preparations are going well on that front. The tricky bit and the challenge to qualification to R2 will be in the shape of Sweden and Venezuela. I expect neither of them will be too happy to have drawn England in the group.

Got my vote. Are Sweden still a force in the game? Or have things changed since I last paid attention to the World Cups?

Confession time: I've got a nagging feeling I was looking at the wrong side, the away side, on the review page, and was thinking it was going to be a tough match, but still wanted to PIC, so was braced for a pasting. Turned out the league winner plays their first match at home...who knew? ;) So yeah, lucky I decided the PIC was more important than the result, and with an injury to a striker it was no decision to go 3-5-2. We went 0-1 down in the first half but I was really pleased when I checked at half time we were 2-1 up. It was only after we cruised to a 4-1 win and I looked at the chances of 10-1 and the ratings showing 60% possession that the penny finally dropped that I'd been looking at the wrong side all this time. Oh dear oh dear. Still, no harm done.

Next best result was a 3-0 win so I'm top of the league. :)

Not sure how the cup game is going to go, I guess if I'd realised I was going to get the lion's share of possession I'd have mixed up my midfield a bit and played some of the B team in the league, this cup game looks close, we'll see, penalty takers set.

Next league game looks tricky, away to a team that swapped in for an easy life I guess, their old league now ranked 5 of 64, while we're 54 of 64. Hopefully they get dumped out of the cup and we don't and they have the mother of all cup hangovers. :)

Got my vote too.

I think I can get through the cup game whilst still training PM, which led me to place my tech forwards and PNF in midfield positions in the League match.
My opponent, however, was good. Last season he won 1, drew 1 against me. Opted to go 550 Long Shot, using those three strikers in the midfield to boost the tactic rating. Went with PIC as really this was a bit of a hail mary tactic - I've never succeeded with LS before, and this opponent was good.

Went 1-0 down in the first half, and one of my strikers in midfield came off with an injury. Tactic skill with LS was Brilliant - quite pleased with that as a non-specialist LS team.
In the 2nd half I did have two chances, neither of which were long shots. One penalty, and one corner & head SE. Both converted, final score a surprising 2-1 victory.

Cup this week looks OK, and the next 5 league matches are straight forward until I get to the double header against the team that finished 3rd last season.

Executive summary: Swapped out to an easier IV series after my old series rated no 1 last season

Going to get back into the updating on her and do the season reviews/updates and some adhoc reports when they are relevant.

Team

I have a lot of HG talent that I have been training since they promoted out of the YA and they are now getting to the age(25+) where their skills means it gets serious if I want to challenge and climb to the top levels of the pyramid.

Training is now suboptimal as I have good players that are not benefitting due to their age in the team playing in training position however all my main trainees will still be improve. Training will be primarily short Passing with a smattering of Set Pieces or PM if I can see a formation benefit in this to win a league game or extend the cup run.

Team TSI will cross the 1.75m mark within the next couple/few weeks and I have 5 HG trainees over 150k TSI.

League

Swapped leagues from IV.58 to IV.47. I did first look at the spare spot in Ian’s series but that was taken by the time I logged on to check it. I did not want to swap from an active and fun series but I have probably 5-6 seasons left with this team and we were all tripping each other up.

Playing in the highest ranked IV series last season was really tough and any of the 6 of us that survived last season would be challenging for the title in almost every other IV. This has been demonstrated by my away win in week 1 this weekend in my new series

Cup

This could be fun. If I can get past R4 I should be in with the a good chance of making it to R7 as my league fixtures work out nicely.

HatStats

Had a best of 393 last season, which in that series was only 3rd best that week!

Coach

Just upgraded to a new Solid/Solid coach with an internal promotee for £350k. While I could afford the £2.3m to convert to an Excellent coach I was not sure it was worth that spend when I am on 14% stamina and soon to be increasing this.

Cash

Have £3.5m in cash and £2.2m in board reserves. Spent £7.25m on new players at the end of last season and will look to get a couple more big signings in so then can benefit from passing training spots rather than them going to waste.

And finally, congrats to Bink on getting another campaign as national manager

Congrats Bink - 70 votes out of 81, a landslide by all measures.....something Mrs May can only dream of....

Having lost to the oppo 5-4 and 5-1 last season, this seasons 4-0 loss shows that we have made pretty much no progress since then....

Midfield heavy and attack heavy, I couldn't find a way to counter them. They could have put a piece of cheese in defence and an earwig in goal and we still wouldn't have scored. Maybe they did. Nine chances to one sums it up.

The cup game is winnable, and then we are away to a team we lost and drew with last season. Ooh, the season feels like a long slog already!

Judging by the ratings last week, we could end up in 7th, with a chance to nick 6th like we did last season and get the qualifier. Here's hoping!

Thanks for the support.

I splashed out on the platinum supporter extension offer, and acquired a 3rd team in South Africa.

To stop myself from spending hours scouring the transfer market, I opted to spend most of the starting capital on upgrading the stadium. I bought a Guam (new country) solid leadership player for peanuts, and as the initial squad had two, now have 3 solid leadership trainees, under a passable coach with no assistants training PM at 5%. I opted for 3-5-2 with no formation xp and won 3-0 against another new team playing 4-4-2 (the only formation that doesn't carry a downside for new teams). The series has 4 new teams and 4 bots so it's an interesting challenge. The other new teams played each other with a similar 3-5-2 vs 4-4-2 with the home side winning 4-1, with 142 hatstats compared to my 146, but they had a better m/f rating (weak (high) compared to my poor (high)).

In Oceania I could have a tough Cup tie (although I've been trying to hide the team's strength) so sent out a half-reasonable side at home to last season's 6th placed team on a PIC but lost the game 1-2. I had 243 hatstats to 216 they played AIM and had 3 chances (all in the middle formidable against my WC central defence) to my 5, (1 of each to left right centre other and SE). We converted the SE, an indirect free kick and were unlucky not to convert at least one of the side attacks or the quick SE. One bot in the series, but I think I have enough to ensure a 5th-6th placed finish.

In England we were tonked 6-0 by the III runners up from last season, which sets the tone for the season. My resilient was injured +3 according to the live match report but showed +1 immediately after the match. It's the first time he's been injured, so it's useful data.

The NT will be my primary focus again for the next two seasons, Sweden had an an amazing escape from a tough Q1 group in the last tournament to get to Q2, and can never be under estimated.

Ooof! Last two games my opponent got an inad midfield, last night, solid. I did not see that coming. 1-0 after extra time, and that's me out in R2. Bit embarrassing!

Looking at the ratings, I lost midfield by 57/43, and even playing 2-5-3 we my defence beat their attack by 40/60. I could have legitimately played 2-5-3 PIC CA! Weird!

I nearly joined you in departing R2 Ian.
It should have been a simple match - training formation on a PIC away from home.
Like you my opponent surprised me with their MF rating. 3-1 down at half time.
Fortunately they had low stamina, and we came back with 3 goals in the second half to make it 4-3.

I was just watching the clock tick down, and then the new ME with more events in injury time kicked in - they scored a goal to make it 4-4 and take it to extra time.
But their stamina really hurt then, and we scored 4 goals in extra time without reply. Final score 8-4.

Next week is a useful IV team. With home advantage I should be OK.

And after the calamitous cup exit, an easy league game would be beneficial. No such luck, away to one of the new boys this week. I thought I was going to edge midfield, so I went 2-5-3 to try and give myself as many chances as I could, knowing my usual ability to cope with a cup exit hangover. The whole thing looked a bit of a coin toss, and that's how it worked out. We had 54% possession, and the attack v defence ratings were similarly close, but slightly edged in their favour. Chances were 5-6. We were 1-1 at half time. Second half they scored, their goalie played a blinder, and we missed a chance, final score 2-1. On a normal week I'd have been a bit miffed maybe, only a bit mind, but after a cup exit I'm entirely unsurprised.

Early in the season to talk about the league, but we've dropped down to second, only one team with two wins, and five of us on three points.

Next week we're at home to 8th. A very brief look suggests we'll edge midfield and be dominant elsewhere. Normally I'd PIC, but I need to get back to winning ways so not so sure about the wisdom of that. Things to ponder.

We almost slipped up in the Cup, the PIC meant we lost midfield marginally and they had 7 chances to our 6, but with a better defence and attack, we made it work in our favour eventually, running out 0-3 winners. There were four injuries, all requiring subs, three for the oppo and one to my best IM, who then also dropped in playmaking skill to Supernatural (and he's only 28).
The Cup reward is another away game that is winnable, so we'll try to make less of a banana skin of that one.

As for the league, we were at home to a team that did us over last season, however being at home I thought we had a chance. 1-0 up, then 2-1 up, it looked promising for a while, till they got an 89th minute equaliser. I thought that was a bit harsh, but we both pulled around 350 hatstats, so I guess I cant really complain.

The other results and ratings lead me to think that 6th is a distinct possibility, I'm in 6th now with 1 pt, the team in 8th is seriously struggling and the team in 7th, well we are away to them next. If I win or draw that one, I think I will be in shape to avoid autorelegation.

Theses changes to the allocation of chances, so that we have more toward the end of the game are supposedly unlikely to affect the outcome, but for teams like mine with 5% stamina share, it has already shown itself to be a significant (and long overdue) change.

How it will affect the NT remains to be seen, most countries already try to utilise players with optimum form, but stamina subs may be more important than ever, which might compromise the use of conditional orders to an extent.

My newest addition to my family of teams, in South Africa IV had a much tougher game than I was expecting against a bot, and it may be that this is down to 7 of the 8 teams in our league now having been allocated a new owner. Mine is the only team as an 'externally based' manager, some are returning users, and some are noobs.

My solid leadership youngsters formed a midfield trio as I stick with playmaking training and I opted for a 4-5-1. We were the only team to win away from home this week (1-2), which moves us up to 2nd. 1st and 3rd both managed 147 hatstats. 1st opted for 3-5-2 AoW, and 3rd went 4-4-2 AoW, The team in 4th played 3-5-2 for the second week running, but lost.

This is shaping up to be a lot of fun as a season, although a warning sign about my going 5% after just one week was the goal we let in on 89...

In Oceania I git knocked out of the Cup last week (104th minute 2-1 winner), but we won 0-2 away in the league 199 vs 198 hatstats, and the home side were playing 5-3-2. We bagged a PNF goal in the 3rd minute (with 3xCD that's quite a lucky one I think) and a CA free kick on 49. That moves us up to 5th after 2.

In England, still in the Cup, I opted for a hapless 5-2-3 formation as cannon fodder in the league, and lost 7-0. Fingers crossed for the Cup game tonight, and don't forget to set penalty takers!

Routine 3-1 win on Sunday, using the the 2nd team.

In the Cup I went full first team, given my uncomfortable extra time experience last week. Opponent put out their reserves, and it was an easy 7-0 win.

This week it's a bot in the league, and a div III team in the cup that might be rebuilding. First team certainly for the cup, and hopefully onwards to R5

In the English Cup R3 was trickier than expected. We had 64-56%, not helped with having an IMTW red-carded (2nd yellow) on 43, and a +5 to my 37y/o winger on 22. This affected attack ratings and they went 1-0 up at 37, until my £5m trainee equalised early in the 2nd half. My sub-winger (excellent primary) took us 1-2 up in the 73rd minute.

Next week is unwinnable, based on last night's ratings with my best 11 vs theirs, so it will bean xp + gate receipts exercise.

In the Oceanian Ruby Challenger Cup I was up against a team with a big defence. That's what I have, so opted for a 3-5-2 play creative, hoping my quicks and useful team set piece skill could help us win. We had 62-57% and 3xSE to 1 for them. We scored 2xcorner to anyone. They missed one corner to anyone. We missed a winger to someone. We had 8 normal chances to their 1. We converted one of the 8 to win 0-3.

Next week we face another big defence, and a CA team.

If I'd have been paying attention, I'd have delved a bit deeper into why this week's opponent played 1-5-2 the previous week (and got a draw!), because not only had they gone ownerless, and that must be their last saved default lineup, despite having 20 players, also they'd had a player injured with no substitute available. This week rolls around and I'm concerned about the size of their midfield, but as their defence and attack are pish, we go 4-5-1 with the first team on a PIC CA. Sunday comes and I go to check on the team halfway through the match, but I can't find it in "ongoing matches", manage to track it down and they couldn't muster nine players, so the game is called off and it's a 5-0 walkover. I could have put the first team out in the George Carey cup! Oh well, saves on potential injuries and cards.

Big match next weekend though, we're away to first place, they're one point ahead of us (we're in second). It's a second team of a Swedish manager that's been playing even longer than I have, first team is in III, or II as the Swedes would have it. So should know what they're doing. They have a massive midfield, and no attack, but I've played 4-5-1 the last couple of games, so that might be obvious. Looking at the stats with a 3-5-2 I'm getting 70% in my defence v their attack, so might go for a slightly odd feeling 3-5-2 CA, but that might not give me enough possession. Maybe 2-5-3 banzaii with two offensive defenders, or 4-5-1 CA with two OCDs, looks like I'm spoilt for choice!

The weekend got off to a good start, as England NT beat Japan 2-0. Two tricky away fixtures up next away to Venezuela and then Slovakia. I had to recall last tournament's GK who at 34/8 is too old really, but injuries to 2 of the 3 eligible forced the issue.

In England my trainees and rag-tag renegades, took a 0-11 thumping, as expected.

In Oceania, we picked up a 0-0 draw to keep the faith in 5th spot.

In South Africa, we've gone top of the league, having won 3/3. We picked up a 6-1 win against the side now 7th. Ratings of 156 or something,

Routine win against a bot in the league.

The cup also proved straight forward last night, and we won 6-1 with a new hatstat record of 362.
Next week looks more difficult - a II team leading their league with a monster team. If they are focused on promotion to the Prem, I've got half a chance. But if they put out anything like their first XI I'm stuffed.
