I had a cracking cup tie last night.

I set up 253 on a PIC, confident I would win midfield and my attack would be good enough to score a few goals.

I logged on early doors to see the initial ratings - and they were as I expected. I achieved 63% in midfield over the whole match.
However the ME decided the gods were not with me in the first half, and duly gave 6 chances to my opponent, to my 1 - halftime score was 3-0.

Second half evened up the chances somewhat - 4 chances to me, 0 to opponent. I scored 3, to take us into extra time.
Two stamina subs came on for me in the 90th minute, and that seemed to help - I scored in the 96th minute, but they equalised 10 minutes later.
Penalties!
I'm pleased to report that we utterly battered them in the penalty competition, so onto R6.

My hatstats were 409 - a new club record!

Next cup opponent is flying high in Div II, being a Long Shot specialist. I don't have a great track record against LS, but I'll give it a go. The PIC from this week will certainly help.

Div IV:
In 2nd playing 4th away from home. Thinking its a loss.

As I'm still in the Cup, I'm using the league for training (passing). Just promoted a 17 yr old striker from the Academy, and I have an Unpredictable GK who need training so my attacking ratings were going to be a little bit pants. Also my opponent can generate rather good defense ratings. So decided to go for an unusual 253 Long Shots fully expecting to lose.
It nearly paid off. I got much better LS ratings than I expected, but ultimately lost 2-1. My goal came from a SE, not a long shot.

I'm down to 4th in the league, and play 2nd at home next week. If I survive another week in the Cup, I'll play the reserves and lose. With the first team I could maybe nick a point.

Div VI:
In 6th place playing a bot. Won 5-0.

Still in 6th, playing 7th away from home. 50:50 game. At least in VI I don't have to worry about relegation....

Been away for a week, North Devon's nice innit? So it's double bonus report time for me.

Week 4 we played a team we've shared the spoils with last season, but seemed a lot weaker this one, after the sale of a few midfielders. Though I guess my B team IMs are pretty strong now as decent trainees. Yes, I played more or less the B team midfield, saving the A team IMs for the cup. Didn't risk a PIC on top. We were winning 2-1 when we had an IM sent off, they equalised, they had some injuries and substitutions, and we ended up banging in a couple of goals in the last 10 minutes for a 4-2 scoreline. Phew!

Round 5 of the cup and I was at home for the first time, up against a big defence, but I had lots of possession. Their attack was pretty decent too, so I couldn't go banzaii 2-5-3, and stuck with the 3-5-2. I went with a PIC. You can't keep PINing the cup can you? That's wrong priorities isn't it? I was 0-2 down after half an hour, 1-2 at the break, 1-3 on 83' might have been the nail in the coffin, though we pulled it back to 2-3 on 90', Fergie time didn't do the business, and that was that. Chances were 9-5, so a little aggrieved maybe, but that's how it goes sometimes.

Week 5 we played the team in 7th, another home match, pretty straightforward, 2-5-3, another PIC, and we steadily ran it up to 4-0, before they got an annoying consolation goal, 4-1 final score, chances 9-2.

First in the league on 12 points, leading by a +9 goal diff from the team that dropped into this league. 3rd is on 8 points.

George Carey cup, then the next league match is an away game to 8th, before the double header v fourth. The game against 8th, looks like I'll have 95% of chances in midfield, but only 15-5-15% in attack. Hmm, wonder how good my longshots are? Or what difference going 2-5-3 would make? My defence is 50/50 in the middle, but I'm streets ahead at left/right back. Yes, a 2-5-3 with 2x CDs seems obvious.

In the Cup last night I was facing a good LS team from Div II.
I went with 253, 2 offensive IM's and 1 powerful DIM, 2 x WTM, 3 x Forward Normal.
As I was against a LS team I didn't need my defense - 1 x CD Offensive, and the other played normally but with man marking orders.

Opponent positioned the player I was trying to man mark in defense, leaving me just with the penalty and no benefit.

However my midfield was much stronger, and we ran out 4-1 winners.
Record hatstats of 439 (at home), which is nice.

Next week I'm ranked 2nd from bottom and am playing the team in 3rd place in the Prem.
They delivered 474 (away from home) hatstats last week.... gulp!

Round 8 of the Cup is the first of the matches held at neutral venues, so that gulf in ratings is only going to get bigger.

I think this is the end of the road!

England were away to Czech Republic on Friday and set up well to deal with our CA even if I did correctly anticipate their attack and bolster central defence. 3-1 loss. TS is still at a disadvantage after all the other teams continued to PIC.

In England, last week we were handed a walkover in the memorial trophy (wooden spoon cup) with a tricky looking away to to 2nd (the amusingly named Connie Lingus) on Sunday. We won m/f 57-55% and were awarded 9 chances to 1, helping us win 1-3 and to take over 2nd spot, 5pts behind the leader. On the V.7 historical standings table I'm now 15pts (and 9 games) behind 2nd with a home game vs 5th to play next and then the double header against the only bot in the series over the next 3 weeks, before the away tie against 5th. The target is now to get 2nd place back in the hostorical standings this season. We also had a 1-5 win last night in the wooden spoon, to keep some Tuesday interest going for next week...

In Oceania in the Sapphire challenge Cup we won 2-4 on penalties last week and as 5th vs 4th won 3-1 in the league to move up to 4th, now 3pts ahead of 5th on identical GD (and 6pts behind the leader). In the early hours of this morning we were facing another tricky tie. They had 83-86% possession, and both sides had big defences. They scored on 35, but we had a quick SE passed to my PNF to level 2 minutes later. They then scored on 51, and we had a CA free-kick chance 3 minutes later which levelled it at 2-2. That's where it ended, although toward the end of the 120 minutes their attack % had gone from 10% to 60 on the left and middle thanks to our low stamina. Yet another penalty shoot-out for my lads, this time winning the match 5-6 to go through to next week.

In South Africa we sold a 17/0 quick winger for £182k and are out of all Cups so the extra revenue was welcome. Beat one of our 3 bots 10-0 on Sunday to remain 3rd and 5pts off the leader. My home grown GK turned 18 this week (wages up to £3167) and he pulled 5* as a brilliant in solid form on Sunday, so training has been going well, the other GK a solid leadesrhip unpredictable 19y/o Nigerian is now 9GK 8Def and plays CD on Sundays for xp.

Lithuania on Friday, really could use some points from them and Angola the following week, before playing Andorra (easy PIC game) so fingers crossed.

Couple of weeks to catch up on....

Conspirator Cup, went out 2-1, fair result.
The following League game was a 1-0 home win against a strong defence, weak midfield and weak attack team, so its always a slog to break them down and nick that goal, which we just about managed.
This weeks league game was away to the bottom team, another strong defence, but this time strong midfield as well, and weak attack. We were stronger in attack and as strong in defence, so I thought it would go our way.
I also thought a CA strategy would work, but they had eight chances to our four and we lost 3-2. I got that one wrong.

So we are in 6th, W2 D0 L4, and its all getting a bit tight in the lower half of the table. The next two weeks head to head is against a league newcomer, we are at home first. Too early for a six pointer? Nah...

Tuesday and we squeezed through in the George Carey Cup 1-2. Looking at the stats, aaah, let's say if it was the proper cup, and I'd been in my opposition's shoes, I'd have been...miffed. 36% in midfield and 31/15/9% in attack...and I win 1-2? Hmmm. Out this week though for sure.

Sunday we were away to 8th, 91% midfield? On a PIC? Okay, only an average of about 15% up front but hey. My 2-5-3 against their 4-3-3 3xIM AIM. It was all sewn up by half time, 0-4, 0-5 by the end, chances were 0-11. No cards or injuries.

Nearly half way, and how are things looking in the league? Well, the III demoted team were on the same points as me, but this week they went down 1-0 to the team in 4th. While 3rd only managed a draw against 6th. This means we're first on 15 points (and +18 goal diff), 2nd are on 12 (+3) and 3rd and 4th on 10 points (+5 & +3 respectively). That'll do me.

The next two weeks is double header time, we're at home to 3rd first of all. A tricky match, should get the lion's share of possession, but they tend to AOW, which they're very good at, so a 2-5-3 isn't so obvious.

Dipped my toe in the transfer market to try and get a CD future coach, nothing changes though, no bidding war, just someone bidding one more over my max bid and securing the player. Ho hum. Still, his playmaking was a bit excessive (SN) for a titanic defender, and £5m+! Wow. Had another look, and there's only 4 possibles, all seem overpriced compared to transfer compare, is controversial/solid still a bad thing too?

@Ian The only issue with controversial/nasty players is that your TS is more likely to take a hit when you buy one compared to nicer characters...

I had a win-win-win-win weekend, which doesn't happen often.

England were at home to Lithuania, and so we called up some players and went for m/f on a 3-5-2 with orders to switch to 2-5-3 if not in the lead. They had issues with attack ratings, and to cover off our PIC and possible m/f grab they opted for 3-5-2 playing creative with 2 levels TS advantage.
We edged midfield had 7 chances each and won 3-1 with the coin toss falling in our favour. One SE each and we scored ours and they didn't.

In V.7 England I was 2nd, and at home to 5th. The move to 10% stamina and the cumulative effects of playmaking training are having an effect as we won m/f 71-65% and had 9 chances to their won, picking up a walkover scoreline 5-0. That takes us to 300pts in V.7 historical standings 12 points and 8 games behind the team in 2nd. The double header is against the bot, but that's hardly going to make a dent in the -196GD we have to them. The current leaders have won all 6 games and are 5pts clear so I'm not worrying about winning the league, I'm certainly not strong enough yet to bounce straight back up to IV anyway.

IN IV.56 Oceania I was 4th away to 7th. Set up with a 5-3-2CA again (still training full-backs crossing skills at the moment), and as they usually play 3xCD I decided to set my PNF as an FTW this week. We produced 4xCA chances from a divine tactic rating, and they were distributed evenly left/centre/right/free-kick and we picked up a Quick SE chance as well. Scored the ones on flanks to win 0-2. They failed to convert any of 10 chances. I'm still 4th on 12pts, but elsewhere 3rd beat 1st 1-0 while 2nd won away at 5th 0-2, with the net effect that the top 3 are all just 3pts in front of me. I've got 3rd in the double header while 2nd has to play 1st. Just to add to the fun 5th will face 6th (both on 6pts) over the next fortnight, while 7th play 8th (3pts and 0pts).

In IV.52 South Africa I was away to one of the 3 bots and won 0-8. 2nd lost 0-2 to 1st (who have won all 6) so I move into 2nd, but the team I've just overtaken is my opponent for the double header, while 1st have last season's Champs in 4th leaving only 5th to play the double header against a bot... They are just 3pts behind me.

Looks like in my 8th season in IV.15 I'm second in the standings, just 20 points behind 1st. I guess I'd better win the rest of the matches this season then!

Had another 100% win weekend, which was nice.

On Friday, the England NT set up against Angola in a 4-3-3CA and they went 4-5-1CA despite an injury to our IMTW reducing our chances to score as well as theirs as a more defensive IM replaced him, we bagged 2 goals down that same side on 43 & 44 minutes and switched to 4-4-2 bringing on 2 defensive IMs for a forward and OIM. It finished 2-0, and in the other game between Czech and Lithuania both PIN'd. Czech are 2nd 1pt ahead of us in 5th and they PINd two in a row, meaning that they now have the worst TS of the top 6.

In England in V.7 we had a bot and we spanked that bot. So at mid season we are 2nd on 16pts, 5pts behind the leaders and 8pts ahead of 5th. In the week we'd had a tricky game in the wooden spoon of supporter cups. We went in 2-1 at the break with The Chauffeur bagging a PNF goal just before the whistle. The trouble was the despite 57-51% possession as well as getting 2 SE chances on top of that powerful chance the distribution of total chances was 7-7 and it went into extra time 3-3. We had two chances soon after the restart and despite struggling with attack % thanks to stamina they both went in. Our defence was in tatters and so it was an even bigger surprise when they failed to convert the one chance they had in extra time, so we won 5-3. Having the bot over at the weekend gives us a slim chance to nick a win this week as well so we'll see how that works out tomorrow...

In Oceania in IV.56 we were in 4th at home to 3rd, playing 5-3-2CA vs 4-5-1. Both sides have big defences. In the first half my PNF bagged a hattrick, including 2xPNF goals and we went in 3-1 up. They had lots of possession, and bagged a 2nd on 55 then injured a winger and scored a 3rd as my Wb switched to the wing to get the accelerated crossing training. Just before the final whistle they injured my other Wb, and it finished 3-3. Elsewhere 1st away to 2nd was a draw as well 1-1 there. So at mid-term we are 4th on 13pts 3 behind the leaders and 4 ahead of 5th.

In South Africa it was a similar game set up with the hosts in 3rd playing 5-3-2 to my 4-5-1. One of the benefits of GK training has been the improved SE potential from the set piece training, and when both sides have dominant defences it can really make a difference. We converted 2/3 free kicks and a penalty and they converted a tech-head SE so we won 3-1. After 7 we are 2nd on 16pts 5 behind the leader (also a GK trainer for South Africa) and 5 ahead of 5th.

In 5th at home to 4th, so i thought we were in with a chance.
After going 0-1 down, the game was clawed back to 2-1 at half time, with one goal coming from a potential future coach, who is a defender about to turn 35. This game might be his swansong, as he was injured with a +5 shortly afterwards.
We held on for the win, eventually getting a third to take the game 3-1.

So we swap places and are now 4th with 9pts, they are 5th with 8pts an the return leg is at their ground. We will have to be clever to hold on to that 4th place. Theres only 5 pts between the bottom five teams, so theres no easy games coming up unfortunately.

The match commentary reminded me that this week we were celebrating (if thats the word) our 15th Anniversary in HT. 15 years. 15 years.
A lot has changed in that time, from those early days on the Motley Fool, names and Fools have come and gone, and on the virtual pitch we have still to savour the delights of Series III !

One day, maybe......

In the league last week I was facing a mid-table contender like myself. I thought I could edge midfield, but my defense is pants and as a result I would concede more goals than I could score.
Which is exactly what happened in the game - I had 52% possession, and scored 50% of my chances, and opponent scored 75%.
However the ME had a brain fart, and gave me 10 chances to opponents 4 - we ran out 5-3 winners.
Up to 4th, with the return leg at home.

In the Cup I was the bottom ranked team, and facing my 2nd Premiership opponent this season.
Didn't think I had much hope. I went 253 for passing training, AIM, and man marked one of his midfielders to try and give me a little more possession - expecting him to go 352. It was the first week of games at neutral venues, which was going to hurt my MF rating.

My man marking failed - the marked player was in central defence. However I think my opponent forgot this was the first week at neutral venue, and went 451 CA.
Result! 3-0 winners.

So still in the cup, still bottom ranked team, and facing my 3rd Premiership opponent next week. He got 510 hatstats last week, to my 387......

second half of the season began with Loco in 4th, away to 5th. We won the first leg 3-1, and suspected they were saving something for this return match.
We held an early lead before they got two late-ish goals to go 2-1 up. Not as late as us, however, as we nicked an 89th minute equaliser, finishing the game 2-2.
We stay in 4th, adrift of 3rd by 6 pts, but only 3 pts away from 7th place. Tight at the bottom, as they say.
Next game is home to the bottom team, whose only victory was 3-2 at home to yours truly. The next in a long series of 'must win' games....

Another win win win win to report

England played Andorra. We were robbed. The match replays suggested an average 0-7 but our luck ran out and we had to rely on our set piece taker to bag a dead ball hattrick to help us to a 0-4 win. England's season will be shaped by away game results to come starting this Friday in Latvia. It looks extremely tricky but at least we are up to 2nd after this week's result on Goals Scored over Angola in 3rd.

In England we played the bot again, and once more we smacked that bot. 9-0. We also managed to win our spoon game on Tuesday so have another one this week, although I've listed our GK to sell after the game because solid leadership GK like Furtardo are thin on the ground, and I might be able to skim some ££ if I can buy a replacement in 3-4 weeks.

On the V.7 historical standings I'm now just 6pts (and -178GD) behind 2nd and 5pts and 10GD behind the leaders who have won every game so far. 9pts clear of 5th.

In Oceania the top 2 in IV.56 drew 1-1 and because of an injury we played 4-4-2CA instead of the usual 5-3-2CA away to 3rd whom we drew with last week. We converted 2 CA chances we had no right to convert and an unpredictable SE to lead 0-3 after 21 minutes. They pulled 2 back in the last 12 minutes (including a wing-head SE), but we got all 3pts. That puts the top 2 on 17 and although we remain 4th, both 3rd and 4th are on 16pts. 3rd play the top 2 over the next fortnight, and we face the top 2 in the last 2 games of the season. 5th are now 7pts adrift, after they beat 6th who were 5th, while 7th beat 8th meaning 5th-7th all have 9pts after 8.

In South Africa we played another big defence vs defence game and after the 1-3 win last week to go 2nd, we nicked this one 1-0 from a 43rd minute free kick. My Cape Verde magical SP taker has bagged us 6pts over the double header and cost just £38k 15 weeks ago. 14 goals for the team to date, and the fans love him. We are 2nd, 5pts and 13CD adrift of the leaders who have won 8/8. 5th are 8pts adrift but there is no playoff reward as IV is the bottom division in South Africa.

The return leg in the league was at home. Opponent switched from their usual 352 to 550 CA. They scored an early goal, and I couldn't break down their 5 man defense until the 89th minute when my unpredictable goalie playing centre forward (for passing training) squeezed in an equaliser.
I'll take the point, to remain in 4th, as the focus this week was the cup.

The Cup game was always going to be difficult.
This was my third game against Premiership opponents, but this chap was much more focused on the Cup game than the other two. He'd just spend £10m on two new players who both started. I'd like to think that my team intimidated him into making those purchases. :D
Last week he was banging in 500+ hatstats, and this was a match to lose. I played with MOTS but couldn't see a path to victory, so ended up with my best XI playing PIN and conditional orders to optimise training when (not if) we were down by more than 2.
Also went AIM, and used a CD to mark a midfielder - which unlike last week actually worked.

However after 10 minutes they were dominating midfield, attack and defense delivering 517 hatstats - sometimes you just lose to a better team.
After 24 minutes they were 2-0 up and then my WTM got a red card, and things went down hill fast. On 37 minutes they scored the third goal, and my 3 conditional subs came on, and minute 42 my IM got injured and I'd used all 3 subs.
Down to 9 men now, the final score of 0-7 was hardly a surprise.

Time to focus on the league.....

In Div IV I was up against a much better team. I was in 4th place, opponent 2nd. Following the Cup exit, I've switched to Defense training with great reluctance.
We lost 2-0, and in hindsight CA would have been a good option, but I doubt I would have scored twice.
We drop down to 5th place.

Next week we playing 3rd at home. We lost 2-1 earlier in the season, and I'd be happy to get a point.

In Div VI we were in 6th playing 7th at home. It was a fairly even match, and the final score of 3-3 was indicative of that. New hatstat record for my developing team of 159.
Bots for the next two weeks should get my confidence up from the miserable "poor" level its been stuck at most season.

Two week holibob* starting on a Sunday, bad planning, so a three match update...

The double header was against a team that was in third at the time. Starting with a home match, my idea was to make sure of a good win and affect their confidence for the return leg, i.e. don't PIC and try and give them a pasting, we dominated midfield, and our defense was staunch, our attack lacked a little for their big defence, but with lots of possession we duly rolled them over 4-0. Not quite sure what happened on the return leg, unless they did a cheeky MOTS, but their midfield was hugely improved, and their defence not great, but their attack pretty shabby as usual, chances were 7-1, but they only converted 1, while we converted 100% of ours, both goals coming in the first 8 minutes. Final score 1-1, and one point gained I reckon. Second place upped the pressure with a jammy 0-1 win to move to one point behind me.

Week 9 and we were at home to 8th place, a big defence but not much else team, they have 1 point so far, and we beat them 0-5 away from home. An obvious PIC, though actually my coach is now on poor leadership so it's starting to get a little pointless to PIC after dropping out the cup, I'll come back to that. So, a 2-5-3 PIC, they score first, but we then bang in 3 unanswered goals for a 3-1 final score. We get 11 chances to their 2, so 3-1 seems lenient. Second win again so are still one point behind, while third are six points back.

Next week we're away to sixth.

Just before we went away picked up a handy german defender, 15 def and 12 PM, and still 24, solid leadership, so an obvious future coach, needs to bank some experience, not really a bargain at £4.9m or maybe he was, who knows, but he was straight into the first team and seems to be doing the business.

* Yes, Tuscany is very lovely thanks! Bastardi hot. Siena probably my favorite of the many medieval hill towns visited.

Lost at home to the bottom team 1-2. That was not supposed to happen. They are still bottom, but their only two wins were against us.
That drops us into 5th, and we have some difficult games ahead.

During the week I've just gone a bit mad, nothing for ages and then two solid leadership CBs at once! Realising the 24 year old is actually probably a bit young to be converting to a coach in a season, and thinking he's still got plenty of time to get some experience, we splashed the cash again, on a 34 year old Panamanian, brilliant experience and solid leadership, oh, and ET defending (16) and titanic (15) set pieces. A shade under £2m. Realised I've now got an embarrassment of riches at the back, but that'll be good when we play the odd 4-5-1 I suppose. Or maybe I need to sell the 4th choice CB. My B team doesn't need to be that good. That said, my current 3rd choice is 36, so not worth anything to sell, and any injury is going to be longer term. Though mostly we're playing 3-5-2 with one CB, or when playing 2-5-3 I sometimes played both WBs as CBs. Choice is good though right? Still turning a bi-weekly profit, but then, I'm doing ok, finances/wages could get tricky if I have a bad season.

This week away to 6th, couldn't risk a PIC looking at the ratings, they had a big defence to break down, so I needed lots of chances. 2-5-3 for me, while they went with a 5-3-2 CA. We had the lion's share of possession, 58% (74% chances), but only an average of about 18% up front. Could we break down the wall? First half, we missed a couple of chances, while they missed a CA, and missed a chance of their own, eventually their defence made a mistake that we capitalised on to go 0-1 up by halftime.

Second half and another mistake by the home defence is the only reported chance, again we make the most of it, and it's 0-2 final score.

Somewhat surprised to see second place slip up away to 7th, until I saw the ratings, unlucky not to get a draw, or the home side were lucky they had a few attacks on their strongest side, not down the middle where it was 2%/98% against them!

Third lost as well, getting a 6-1 pasting.

All this means I'm sitting pretty at the top of the table on 25 points, while second (Must Destroy) are on 21, third on 16 and out of it. Sneakily looked at the promotion table, and we're the first team below the line currently.

Week 10 already? Time to look at the run in...

Week 11
5th v Me
Must Destroy (MD) v 7th

Week 12
Me v 3rd
8th v MD

Week 13
6th v me
MD v 3rd

Week 14
Me v MD

Must Destroy with a much easier run in, my away matches are both potential banana skins, particularly the week 13 game. So if they're planning it right MD should turn up at the final game with better team spirit, but we'll just have to see where we are, if we're still in front, and above the promotion line, it's an obvious MOTS, we should have all the possession, but they have a monster defence, so it could be tricky, anyway, that's a month away, many a slip, one game at a time, etc etc.

Not much to report this week:

Div IV
Next week we playing 3rd at home. We lost 2-1 earlier in the season, and I'd be happy to get a point.....

...and we failed.
Played 532 to train defense. Midfield ratings were good enough, but lacking wing skill on my wing backs so failed to convert chances. 3-1 final score.
We stay in 5th.
Playing 7th away from home next week. I should be OK even on a PIC.....

Div VI
Bots for the next two weeks should get my confidence up from the miserable "poor" level its been stuck at most season.

8-0 win and confidence up to Strong. More bot bashing next week.
We stay in 5th.
