Can anyone recommend a book on how to play golf. One of grandchildren wants to take it up but has never played in their life so would like a basic book explaining the ins and outs so they don't make too much of a fool of themselves, Their friend has offered to play with them but they just need something so they don't look a complete pratt.

'The Sweet Spot' podcasts have some good guests on them, and the following link has a junior golf instructor talking about development and best-practices, and it might be worth them sitting down and listening with a parent as well -

The suggested Youtube avenue sounds very good as well, as once they're set up with a few good search terms, they can be left alone to dive into those video-related aspects related to starting out in golf.

Your local golf club or driving range might offer cheaper/free introductory instruction for juniors depending on their age. They can get their hands on suitable golf clubs to have a few practice hits.......or misses. They'll pretty quickly know if it's for them. The instructors are usually pretty friendly and competent and it will be in a safe environment.

Problem is I was going to get a book as a Christmas present - hey ho back to the drawing board. Thanks for your recommendations re Youtube etc. will pass them.

Here's one -

Won't stop 'em looking like a pratt though. You can play golf for years and still look a pratt...

Get them a box of golf balls too. They'll need them. Any cheap ones will be fine, or if more expensive try to get ones with a tracker.

Treat them to a lesson with local course pro. Many clubs offer 'new to golf' group courses. That way they will be taught the basics how to hold the club correctly etc. If they don't get that right they will have no chance and it is hard to break ingrained bad habits.

Speak with the golf clubs that are local to your grandson. The best ones will have a junior section where they offer weekend group lessons as part of the membership package and then get him membership at this club (it costs peanuts compared to adult golf membership). This is by far the best long term investment for any junior into this sport.
