If we are being pedantic (and it seems we are) then you'd expect someone who works in the football industry to know that it was perfectly possible to win the old European Cup without being the previous league title winners, and also losing games on the way. Just one example would be Nottingham Forest in 1980. They qualified as reigning European champions but were runners-up to Liverpool in the league the previous season. On the way to the final, they lost games to both Dynamo Berlin and Ajax, ultimately winning on aggregate in each case.

Sometimes, when it's obvious what someone means, it can be more conducive to friendly discussion if we just let it go, don't you think? ;)

one example?!

The old "Which team have won the European Cup more times than their national league?" question was a pub quiz staple
- has there been another?

A slightly different question!

But, if you like your quizzes, then four other teams that won the European Cup without winning their league the year before were:

Real Madrid (1960)
Ajax (1972)
Bayern Munich (1976)
AC Milan (1990)

Or the only team to be a semi final winner not to lose in the subsequent final but yet have never been champions.

My brother-in-law also had that defect in his character. Strange, he was otherwise totally normal, and a fine lad.

A bit late, but Amazon have the EPL again this week.

Chelsea v Palace on at the moment. Everton v Man City later.

[expletive deleted] tomorrow.

Man City remind me of watching the Real Madrid galacticos back in the day. Or Barcelona for around the same era.

They're just soooo good.

Having KDB back has got them firing on all cylinders once more. When Haaland returns they'll be turbo-charged.

And yet, like Real Madrid and Barcelona, I find them curiously unsatisfying to watch

I know Everton are lacking a reliable goalscorer, but I think a player from Denbigh Town might find it a difficult step-up to the Premier League

Big win for [expletive deleted] tonight and a decent win for Villa yesterday. Man City have a chance to close it all up tomorrow against Brentford. Great stuff

Oooft.

3 horse race, with @rsenal just ahead by a nose. 7 to play.

A Man City FFP 700 point deduction can't come soon enough

Yeah, and a nice wee bunfight/handbags at the end too.

I do like how the commentators deplore such skirmishes.....secretly though they're hoping for a full blown playground punch up.

Don't hold your breath. Citeh's legal team will be the best money can buy.

Just as exciting at the cheap end of the table. Will Luton and Forest climb over my Palace? Their last 7 games are tough, starting with Liverpool next Sunday, at Anfield.....gulp

Interesting also if Leceister get a points deduction for their (likely) ffp breach. That'd put Ipswich and Leeds into automatic. And Leceister in play offs.

But Leicester are not currently in the PL so will argue that a pts deduction is unfair. Realise that's a championship issue but could determine who'll be in PL 24/25.

If they get a pts deduction delayed until next year that could hamper their ability to stay in the PL, especially given the growing gap between the two divisions.

Man City's hearing is later this year. It could result in their expulsion from the league not a matter of points deductions as the charges so serious. Or could be too difficult to prove, nothing to see here folks :D it's Citeh after all, cause Everton, Forest and Foxes fans to have a meltdown

Ar5enal and Liverpool lose at home! Can City cope with the pressure?
The PL race is intoxicating.
