as it turned out the heroes of RWC game v Fiji were mostly lacking dues to club commitments at their French clubs so it was effectively

Ouch.
I can imagine quality and physicality dropping off considerably.
The captain of the national side in one very large European nation that is not a traditional rugby country plays for my old club in London. They are in Counties 3 (ie the lowest possible level in the English hierarchy).
