its difficult to classify Ballance as even unproved - he's had enough chances. And to end up with an avereage of just 21 from 4 innings surekly says enough given the amount of opportunities he has now had.

Its a bit of a bugger still as England still have three spots in the top 5 up for grabs with the Ashes looming.

This really does highlight the weakness in England's batting at 2, 3 & 5. To be competitive in the Ashes we need 2 of these 3 positions to be scoring 40+ in every innings.

There was a need to replace Strauss, Trott, Bell and Pietersen. They've only got Root. Taylor was forced to retire with health problems.

Yes of course.

And there is now a weakness in England's batting at 2,3 and 5. The list of those platers mentioned retired

Stauss:2012
Trott:2015
Bell:2015
Pieterson:2014

Taylor only played 7 tests to be fair to him, but an average of just 26 in 13 innings with a highest score of 76 and just two fifties in that time hardly shows he was a sure fire selection maybe.

So in 5 years England have failed to find an opening partner for Cook, and haven't found a solid performer for the upper order either.

I'd day that was a concern.
