We've just booked a week in Somerset, a little village called Bleadon, South of Western Super Mare. We're doing some research into OHs grandfather who was born nearby but any recommendations for places to visit and pubs with decent grub gratefully received.

Go to Wells for its wonderful cathedral in honey coloured stone, the bishp's palace gardens, and the swans that ring a bell at the gatehouse in order to be fed. Plenty of pubs in the city. The big old hotel/pub to the right of the cathedral precinct gate was good -The Crown at Wells.

Wells Cathedral is particularly stunning when you come round the corner and suddenly behold that west face in early evening sunlight.

wells is a must , glastonbury much less so.

weston , much maligned , is well worth a look as you are so close .

we like clevedon , which has a pier.

for coast walks/views brean and sand bay well worth seeing .

for birds , rspb ham wall is brilliant , especially now , you will hear bitterns - and wedmore which is nearby has a good little hotel - the swan - for food .

call at tyntesfield NT if you can .

:) :)

The Helicopter Museum, on the A371, a short bus ride outside Weston S/Mare (2 miles? 3 miles?), is certainly not everyone's cup of tea, but those whose cup of tea it is will find it a pretty extraordinary place. It has a tremendous amout of stuff, ancient and modern - of particular interest to this observer is the stuff from the heyday of the British aircraft industry ('40s, '50s and '60s) when Britain had a multiplicity of small aircraft manufacturers, and a rash of engineers with clever ideas.

A family day out? I don't even try. I hand over money for ice-creams, point in the direction of the pier, then run for the bus.

We like the stone circles at Stanton Drew -three sets of . easy flat access.
Then there's the Book Barn at Hallatrow , with 1M books at £1, and a cafe .
Clevedon - Poets walk along the coast cliffs from the pool is also pleasant .
Anybody mention Cheddar gorge yet ?
plus big car boot there on Sundays .
Have fun !

If aviation history interests you, the new Bristol Aerospace museum is opening this summer, at Filton airfield, and has the last Concorde:

I'm planning on being there when it opens.
