Postby jtr63 » August 22nd, 2018, 3:29 pm

My wife would like to visit the Versailles Palace in the autumn. Can anyone pass on any gems of information ? Travel methods - from Cambridge / London, where to stay, how long to plan for visit, sources of information to prepare for the visit, etc. etc.

TIA

The official website (in English) is here: http://en.chateauversailles.fr/ and suggests that you plan to spend a full day if you intend to visit all of the different parts of the estate.

From Cambridge I would think that a train to Kings Cross and then the Eurostar from St Pancras would be easiest. There are also direct flights on Easyjet from Luton to Paris Charles de Gaulle.

If the visit is going to be part of a longer trip to Paris then I would stay somewhere in central Paris and take the RER line C out to Versailles.

There are a few hotels in Versailles itself. I stayed at the IBIS. The main Versailles station is Gare de Versailles Chateau Rive Gauche (an interesting architectural style), which is on the RER 'C' so a frequent service into Paris. Only a very short walk to the palace.
